Mary J. Blige has incredible album discography, yet ATRL pays her dust. Why?

This woman dropped album after album after album with so much quality put into them, yet the conversation around Mary is mute. I can bet this thread will not make it to page 2, or at best it will barely scrap second page before being left to die.

Beautiful Ones, I Can Love You, Destiny, No More Drama, Good Woman Down, Be Happy, Don't Go, Doubt, she has materials for days, truly....

I hope she starts getting her flowers while she is still with us, especially with critics who should review her discography in retrospect and her incredible impact and legacy

Mary is great. I LOVE her but her discography is far from being flawless. Ever since Growing Pains her albums have gotten worse and worse. My Life II might be an exception.

I hope she goes back to recording songs like No More Drama, Be Without You and I'm Goin' Down.

Only the album cover aesthetics declined, (every album cover looks tragique after Growing Pains) but quality remained sis

This definitely deserved to be a top 10 hit at the very least!

Very much this. She had one good song on that 'Gorgeous' album. I do think she should link up with younger writers and producers.

There are a few reasons why Mary isn't praised as much on atrl:

1.) it's built off the basis of pop music.

2.) Atrl doesn't care much for R&B music as a whole.

3.) A lot of people on atrl now are Generation Z and MJB hasn't had a mainstream or solid hit with them.

I was just going to say this! Y'all know the ATRL gays don't care for R&B like that.

That's my favourite from her.

Mary is a PURE R&B artist through and through. This site is not for that.  :lmao:

you think a site full of people who unironically listen to hilary duff would support a legendary r&b queen like mary?

Same with Pink. Atrl only seems to like Blow Me One Last Kiss. I guess Mary and Pink need to make Charli XCX type music to get support from atrl!

lol exactly. Most people's music tastes here are not sophisticated or diverse.

this might be my favorite single of hers. The others that could contest it for me are Not Gon' Cry, All That I Can Say, Deep Inside and Real Love.

MJB da MVP is my favorite song from this album! She got 50 Cent at his peak to rap praises on how much of a LEGEND Mary is :jonnycat:

MJB's discography is R&B greatness. She stays consistent with her lyrics, message, and image.
Queen deserves to be called Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. :clap3:

Imagine debuting with 730k sales in 2005 and having the biggest R&B song of all time as per Billboard

Imagine selling 623k in your 1st week and debuting at #2 only to go #1 the next week

She ruled the 2000s with such an iron fist and was the definition of consistency

Let me stream "Runaway Love" - a #2 Hot 100 smasha

I still have my older sister's cassette of 411 somewhere around my house! But I think to everyone's points, this site just doesn't connect to her type of music (or most r&b in general) like they do with pop.

I became a Mary fan after her halftime show, and honestly her album discography isn't that great, her tracklists are always bloated and have at least some filler

I just finished listening to The Breakthrough a couple of weeks ago and honestly was disappointed, BWY/One are some of my fav Mary tracks but the album was not it...

That being said, her 90s run is IMMACULATE and What's the 411 is one of my favourite albums of all time. She did THAT

I need to revisit it because I haven't listened to it in ages, but I always thought Love & Life was her only real weak album. But I really wouldn't expect the average user here to be a fan of her brand of R&B, hip-hop and soul.
