A Million Lights Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Both were their media victim album, had 3 iconic singles (GM, POM and BTI / WDYM?, Sorry and LY), and both albums are POP BIBLES by the two biggest teen megastars of all time. Agree ? 1 2 3
YourFavoriteWeapon Posted July 18 Posted July 18 How can an album be a pop bible when less than half songs are listenable? 2 1
supertiffany Posted July 18 Posted July 18 ewww BLACKOUT is one of the best and most influential pop albums of all time 12 1 3
BoDaToe Posted July 18 Posted July 18 There is no "male Blackout" because men are incapable of making something as exceptional. 2 8 5 2
bielneira Posted July 18 Posted July 18 'Purpose' is not as good as 'Blackout' I fear (I do love it tho
Just a Gay on ATRL Posted July 18 Posted July 18 No. Purpose is not a forward thinking pop album like Blackout was. Purpose followed trends of mid 2010s pop, electronic & R&B music to the tea. It already sounds dated in less than 10 years time. WDYM aged the worst of the singles by far but even Sorry is showing its age in the current landscape. While Blackout sounds very Timbaland/Danja 2000s, it was more clubby, still sounds fresh, and most important, it was collectively influential to future artists. She took the trends at the time and made them her totally in her own vision. How many artists are citing Purpose as an influence on their albums these days versus Blackout? Artists like Charli, Slayyter, Tove Lo, & more hyperpop artists consider Blackout one of their most important albums to shaping their musical style. 1 2

Would argue with this though, Purpose was the catalyst of the trop pop domination of 2016-2018 and the "Spotify playlist friendly" chill pop that even Britney tried on Glory (Purpose and Revival being the obvious blueprints). But it's a clear example of all the attention going to making singles and a lot of the album tracks being an afterthought to release the whole thing quickly after Where Are Ü Now "restored" his image to the GP. It's easily more influential to the industry and chart hits than Blackout, but nowhere as close as good (so people that you mentioned like Charli who appreciates good pop music are more fond and likely to cite than Purpose).
