halcyonday Posted July 17 Posted July 17 (edited) Chappell Roan debuted with her campy synth dance album last year and grabbed GP's attention this year with her viral tracks and new single Good Luck Babe. Allie X debuted a decade ago with her synth-pop EP/album COLLXTION I, and released many dark dance pop albums since, including COLLXTION II, Super Sunset, Cape God, and 2024's Girl With No Face. Allie X has never achieved the level of success that Chappell is having right now, even though she also delivered synth pop bops and fun, interesting visuals. Where would you rank The Rise and Fall Of a Midwest Princess compared to Allie X's discography? Is it better than any release of the Galina songwriter? Edited July 17 by halcyonday
ScorpiosGroove Posted July 17 Posted July 17 the electric chappell girl can only dream of making a cape god or girl with no face
Marry The Gods Posted July 17 Posted July 17 No. Allie X makes cheesy music but some of her songs are undeniable ear worms. I listened to Chappell's album a week ago and I was expecting something more eccentric and thought provoking but instead I heard something that sounds forced and sloppy. This tweet pretty much sums up my thoughts on her fans calling her a genius 2
ATRL Moderator wehavetostan Posted July 17 ATRL Moderator Posted July 17 Allie X has some great songs but not a fully great album. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is a phenomenal album and some annoying stans on Twitter won’t take that away 2 6 2
halcyonday Posted July 17 Author Posted July 17 As a casual fan of both I have a confession to make. I discovered Allie X in 2014 when I heard Catch on tumblr, and to this day it's the best example of synth pop perfection in my opinion. The entire album is very fun, catchy, and shows that she had a lot of potential. BUT, somehow, the other albums failed to make the same impact in my household. I appreciate several tracks from the other albums, such as Galina, or Downtown, but I feel like she lost the spark I heard on COLLXTION I. And there comes Chappell with her debut album that's a mix of campy bops, interesting ballads, beautiful synths. It feels like a rollercoaster, but in the best possible way. I can play the album on a loop and I never get bored, because of how diverse it is. Red Wine Supernova, Casual, SGUMG, HOT TO GO!, Karma, Kaleidoscope, Manthattan, California, Guilty Pleasure, LORD! SO many bangers in so many unique approaches! This is what I needed in pop music - the campy synthy bops with fun lyrics and addicting hooks! Chappell delivered and kinda stole the visual pop artist niche that Allie X was slaying before her.
goverm3nth0ker Posted July 17 Posted July 17 allie fell of with that girl with no face album, came bouncin but her debut didnt sound fresh or unique like chappell's
sha-nasty Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Not really. I mean maybe Collxtion ll. I really thought GWNF was gonna get the treatment Chappell did this year, not that I didn't love Chappell too. Just felt like Allie would get her moment
Riverbank Posted July 17 Posted July 17 You can tell Chappell's debut is very Allie X (and early Marina) influenced. And both of their aesthetics heavily borrow from drag culture so I can see why the comparisons make sense. I feel like if Allie X debuted in this music climate, her career would have a better shot at taking off. She was kind of ahead of her time and too "avant garde" for the GP sadly 9 minutes ago, wehavetostan said: Allie X has some great songs but not a fully great album. shadowfred Posted July 17 Posted July 17 No. Of course no. "Sanctuary" on CollXtion I ends all songs on the Chappell's debut album. Period.
Cruel Summer Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Um, no? Like I love Chappell and all, and I think she's going to produce even more great work in the future, but literally every Allie project clears her first album, largely as a result of being composed with a little more cohesion and collective intention (see Super Sunset for example - it's short, but it's all good and it sounds like a single cohesive experience throughout). I honestly don't even think it's close. Chappell hits a particular vibe that has more energy and I guess if you're explicitly looking for something that's more "fun" then she hits that mark, but records like Girl With No Face and Cape God are substantial, have depth, and maintain quality throughout in a way that I just didn't experience with Rise and Fall. Red Wine Supernova and Good Luck Babe (I know it's not on the album) had me obsessed for a while each individually, but Allie's albums have always had me hooked as a whole, and for much longer. I think we should give a little extra credit for Girl With No Face being almost entirely self-written and self-produced, too. Even on a micro-scale, though, I'd put Allie's best tracks very much above Chappell's. 4 1
SweetOreosOfHeaven Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Love Chappel but Girl With No Face I'm so sorry Cape God I'm so sorry Super Sunset I'm so sorry CollXtion I I'm so sorry 1

Two of my fav songs
Khal Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Having admittedly just gotten into Allie earlier this year thanks to GWNF, this feels insulting to Allie. No disrespect to Chappell
K$Ellie Posted July 17 Posted July 17 if she cut like four of the fillers maybe but Collxtion I remains superior for now
skankle Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Allie Xcrement doesn't have as many good songs across her entire discography as Chappell has on The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess.
JoeAg Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I love Chappell, but Allie's new album GwNF is honestly one of the best new wave albums I've ever listened to. it's perfect from front to back, and infinitely replayable. her first several albums are all brilliant too, but Collxtion II and GwNF are easily her best to date for me. Chappell will get there with time! theyre both phenomenal artists though
NoOneDiesFromLove Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Let's not get ahead of ourselves omg… Chappell is cute but she's not there yet, she just happens to make catchier music. Try again when she makes an album like Cape God, CollXction I and II, etc
