Wicked Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Which user-driven music review/rating site do you prefer and why? RYM is easier for me to use, I can't really get the hang of AOTY. I can get more specific when searching for something as well. AOTYs profile pages are nicer though.
Raphy23 Posted July 17 Posted July 17 (edited) I like rym because of all the sub-genres listed for every song. so if I like a song with a specific sound it helps me discover more music like that. Edited July 17 by Raphy23 1
SLIME Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Never tried AOTY, I have been using the other one since 2018 I believe. What are the benefits in comparison?

AOTY pros: Better search function More mainstream slant (probably better to see new releases) Grading out of 100 instead of 5 stars (if that's a preference which for many it is) RYM pros: Much larger database The lists Genre pages Chart function is far superior 1
Devin Posted July 17 Posted July 17 i wanna make an account with AOTY but if RYM more genre-specific i might do that. 2
Suilen Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I don't actively use either, but RYM seems better when it comes to non-English music. 1
Nights Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I find RYM to be more functional. The userbase is also much larger which has its pros and cons. 1
gustavothehuman Posted July 17 Posted July 17 (edited) AOTY feels better to me. With that said, burn both of them to the ground with all the pretentious hipsters inside Edited July 17 by gustavothehuman 6
Archie Posted July 17 Posted July 17 i feel like RYM is way more plagued with incel, edgelord types. the design of AOTY is better and it's easier to find things.
BlackoutZone Posted July 17 Posted July 17 RYM is more rich in information, but the site is very outdated and their scoring system is far more limiting. Not to mention there is still insane amount of incel community with insufferable misogyny and homophobia. AOTY is far more progressive 4

You can even tell by the user scores, which are usually a bit more positive on AOTY. I've been using AOTY for a while now and I love it. I've been finding great albums based on the user score and they're usually correct. A lot more consistent than Metacritic, which should be ignored by stans already Edited July 17 by Alaska. 1
Cloröx Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I stopped using both when stan Twitter started polluting both websites but still AOTY>>>RYM. Too many pretentious close-minded people in RYM like other said RYM is heavily misogynistic and homophobic
Technicolor Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I would say RYM. It feels more complete to me and it has made me discover new releases with their lists. However AOTY has a much better design and rating system 1

But it doesnt bother me because I just use google to find the song I'm looking for on rym. 1
KatyPrismSpirit Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Neither matter. I'd make the argument that music reviews are pretty pointless in today's society. Just enjoy the music you enjoy. It's really that simple. Trust your own ears

They have other purposes (RYM moreso) 1
Ewan Chaos Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I use RYM but that's because it was the first I started using and it can be hard for me to transition to something else. And the reason why I never thought to sign up for AOTY was because I thought it was meant to be more of a Metacritic replacement than being similar to RYM nnn no clue where that confusion came from I'd hate the 1-100 rating personally because I'm indecisive enough on grading on a star system, but I get the appeal. RYM really does have whatever I need though. It's more for myself to remind myself of albums I know I enjoy and would want to listen to again as well as compile lists. Just stay away from the comments sections (which I learned in 2021 with Sensational's, my God the idiocy of some people, not that that's RYM-exclusive mind you ) 1
