You're right. But this is the same woman who had #1 hits with lyrics like:

"Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?"

Something worked back then and isn't now. I think it's because we all were 10 years younger. We had youth and an overall happier society. 
 

I think payola had a large part of it. I always thought much of Katy's hits were average or good, but after hearing them over and over on the radio I slowly grew to love them. 
 

I also think it's because Katy's way of selling sex isn't wanted anymore. In an era where the iconic Victoria's Secret Fashion Show was cancelled due to body image backlash, Katy can't shake her busty chest in a bikini, give us a wink, and blow us a kiss. That's basically what she was doing in the WW video and we see the reception to it compared to California Gurls.

Katy just isn't cool in 2024. She's very much a product of her time and that's fine. She's almost 40 and her music was never timeless. Not everyone can have the cross-generational impact and appeal that artists like Lana have. She had a monumental run with one of the best pop albums ever between 2010-2012. She needs to retire and just spend time in nature!
