The hate towards Katy Perry is overdone

It is easier to hate on a popstar than any other public figure. The dogpiling is predictable as hell. She deserves the criticism but all these publications "reviewing" her song when they barely do that just to write how much they hate her is also embarrassing.

It's engagement farming really. Considering the Guardian have been BEGGING readers to donate for years now, I understand their desperation. Music journalism in general has lost credibility because they always let the perception of the celebrity influence their review.

this part is very true

collaborating with Luke when some of y'all faves have worked with rapists, sexual abusers (including some who still work with choreographers and producers who are being accused rn) and zionists

The hate towards her is actually pretty fair.

Nah, it's just starting and it's well deserved. The public has begun hearing the song and there's so much more hate to come. Dogging on Katy will never get old, she has been awful for nearly 15 years but it's even better now especially with her antics over the last 4 years.

She dug her own grave with this sadly. But it's a lot of bandwagon / trolling hate

Everyone was waiting for her comeback until the song leaked. It definitely isn't a comeback material and when Dr Luke's name was attached to a song about Female empowerment, backlash was bound to happen.

I believe the reason for today's backlash was fuelled further by lack of bridge, final song being even worse and pointless video. She does get hate disproportionately compared to other pop starts. Though, it does look like the controversy was created on purpose.

All other 4 snippets sound good and if she delivers with this album, she wouldn't get huge backlash like today on album release day.

She's survived worse, but she's at the point in her career where her label should be protecting her instead of going rogue

Like I really hope the next single is a banger because if this new era flops bc of bad song choices I will riot

the problem is not this song. The problem is that Katy Perry is the pop girl equivalent of Nickelback,Maroon 5, LMFAO

she is everything that people dislike about pop music - vapid, generic, no sense of style or any sort of substance, the lyrics are always A grade awful that they are borderline offensive, creepy sexual image combined with kindergarten aesthetic (stolen from those comic books) and awful vocals on top of all of it. I will  not even mention Dr. Luke

I used to be able to listen to her music like a decade ago, but now as I am older it's obvious how bad and cringe everything she released is bar maybe few songs, I am actually shocked that in the era where we had Rihanna, Gaga and Beyonce at their peaks, Katy Perry was considered their peer and had similar success vise. It's obvious people share this sentiment and finally saw her for what she was during Witness era

I would say that even Selena Gomez who is always called the most talentless and worst MPG here has much better, more mature and interesting pop catalogue than Katy

if you compare her to all the other MPGs, all of them have some sort of edge, dash of personalty, some sort of interesting quirks in their music, they act and look like adults

Katy Perry on the other end is the actual Mc Donalds of pop music, or she used to be when she was successful, now she's just that trashy local bodega you go to after a drunk night out

She's just the woman of the moment for the entire internet to come together to hate, recently it was JLO and Camilla before her, and another will follow after her. There's nothing this culture loves more than building women up to then tear them down and laugh as they fall. It's oh so predictable that gay men are at the forefront of these takedowns cause at the end of the day gay men are just that, men.

I feel sad when I see a popstar suffering all this hate. I know that SHE working with Dr. Puke again, in a feminist anthem song (!!!), is not a smart move, but it's hard to see this hate, you know? Xtina, who is my blessing fave, suffered a massive hate campaign in 2010 and it was devasting actually. It is out of the artist control. And the haters embraced all that hate just for the fun, spreading out all the fake news to feed the hate even more. really tragic. Britney suffered even more in 2007 and we all saw her collapsing in a disgrace that echoes till nowadays. Gaga, Madonna... it seems like every major pop artist is destined to suffer.

I actually feel for Katy and her fans cause stan culture is a really bad thing, and after all, Katy is an artist and a fun woman.

Perfectly said. :clap3:

I do agree that the hate train against her seems very forced BUT the lashings for working with Dr. Rape are absolutely neccessary.

Cuz her position in the music industry was so high :next:

Yeah the Song is not even that bad.  It's mediocre...anyways bad or not It's just a pop Song from an artist is not even that relevant in the culture right now to justify all this obsession and the mean spirited hate at this level.

But i mean here people made even worst with TTPD for being just an 80/100 album and not an 85 so...

Btw if this Song would have been recorded by some ex BTS member for Pitchfork would be a 7.5/10.

Of course. She's everything people despise about pop music which is why she's one of the most recognizable and successful pop artists of our generation and her hits with those vapid lyrics without substance have billions of hate streams! It just adds up!

I'm not a Katy fan in any way, and I do think the new single is quite rancid. However, if you feel similarly, just say you think the song sucks, boycott it for the interesting producer choice, and move on. Making 137 threads about it feels useless and boring at this point. The best condemning is just letting her bomb, not giving it incessant attention.

I will say that a huge switch up happened when the first snippet got released. Part of the backlash also stems from lack of musical evolution. Even I was rooting for her before it became the mess we are witnessing (no pun intended) right now, but maybe I was delusional for expecting something different out of Katy. Terrible associations mixed with little to no evolution explains where the negative response is coming from. It's truly that simple. She had the perfect setup for a comeback and goodwill from the public, but she and her team could write a handbook on how to make the most awful moves possible.

What I don't get is why she decided to work with Luke for THIS song. I mean, if you're going to ruin your career by working with a rapist, at least go down with a banger. Did this the best they could come up with? Max Martin could've done it lol.
