Should the Selective Service System's sexism and transphobia be ended? (The Draft)

Currently, men 18 years old or older in the U.S. are required to sign up to the Selective Service System, also known as the Draft. It is sexist and transphobic for the following reasons:

  • U.S. citizens or immigrants who are assigned male at birth and changed their gender to female are still required to register
  • Individuals who are assigned female at birth and changed their gender to male are not required to register
  • Women aren't required to register at all

The ACLU pushed for this discriminatory practice to end in 2021, but it went nowhere. Oddly enough, feminist groups essentially ignored their pleas and did not support ending this policy.

Should this practice be put to pasture?

This may sound crass, but I really don't care about whether or not women and trans people can join an imperialist army.

Low-key yeah. We should be arguing for the abolition of the draft not its expansion to even more people.

The draft is a dumb relic of the past and making women have to sign up might accelerate its end.  So yes.

Can we make it homophobic again and ban gays too?

In all seriousness, the fact such a barbaric order exists in 2024 is terrifying and no person should be forced into servitude.
