Taylena Posted July 11 Posted July 11 "GP" but it's always the 100k to 200k liked tweets that you can tell it's an echo chamber of the same people that hate her.
mxoonlight Posted July 11 Posted July 11 This is literally not true. If major publications are afraid to critique your work and you have dedicated segments on morning television delegated to promoting you and your work, your artistry is not being downplayed. 2 2
MidnightsAtPeace Posted July 11 Posted July 11 no honey, it's just bitter gay men who listen to pots and pans music and gay club house songs with gibberish lyrics vomited all over them, which to their standards, is peak artistry and revolutionary, that hate on taylor and downplay her artistry. The GP actually loves her They hate it because they think their favs deserve her success and popularity, but if they did, they would've achieved it. 1 2 1
Arrows Posted July 11 Posted July 11 If 10 million saw that video and one million liked it, how does that say anything?

Something is not "not good" because it's not commercially successful or because queer people listen to it. 2

What_A_Mess Posted July 11 Posted July 11 Every one has their own taste in music. She is a big star, so she's also a big target
bielneira Posted July 11 Posted July 11 She still has it, but she needs to stop making music for teenagers 1

swissman Posted July 11 Posted July 11 (edited) I think "downplaying" is closely linked to calling someone "overrated" and in terms of doing that, the first thing we need to do is access WHAT they're rated for. For example, to call Madonna overrated because she isn't a renowned vocalist presumes that people do say she's a renowned vocalist, thus making her rating higher than the vocal talent she has. In actuality, Madonna is not considered by many to be a renowned vocalist and is rated where she's at ("The Queen of Pop" not "The Queen of Singing") because of the immensely important pop culture moments she's gifted us, for the bold choices she's made that have pushed the needle forward and opened doors, for her overall artistry, for her long popularity while maintaining quality, etc. all of which she certainly fulfils, thus making it hard to say she's overrated. So, in terms of downplaying, I think there's a connection to what exactly are they downplaying. I think it's because mainly Taylor's artistry is wrapped up in the idea of her as a songwriter, that's squarely why people end up "downplaying" her. But in order for true downplaying to happen she'd have to have more than just a very capable pen. I don't think she's untalented, but I do think a lot of the "downplaying" is due to the fact that people simply don't see her artistry as dazzling, unique, innovative or even interesting to warrant what is now FOUR Album of the Year wins. When these people go hear or read what the fuss is about, they are met with feelings that (as the OP has partially said) there is a lack of flavour or clichés or metaphors that seem to try really hard. It's not that she doesn't have cleverness or even worth in her art, but what she's labelled as by many as a receipt for her success and acclaim (a songwriting genius) isn't exactly what the outcome presents itself as to many people who just don't see that artistry as reaching the level it should be for the level she is at and in comparison to what other songwriters out there are doing similar things. A user repping an album they may like isn't exactly a cosign for it being the most artistic album of our time, or even an artistic album of our time or that they could never declare that another artist has valued commerciality. It's simply an album someone wishes to use in their avatar. 1

Comedor Posted July 11 Posted July 11 People say her talent is songwriting, that she has a way with words. But this talent of her is subjective, many people don't find her pen work impressive or interesting at all. Its different from a singing talent. Even if you don't like songs from Whitney, Beyonce etc, you can still praise and recognize their vocal performance. 1 1

But lyrically, it's one of her best.
