Taylor fanboy Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Curious to see an alternate universe of 2011 if Hurricane Adkins didn't happen. 1
Selegend Posted July 10 Posted July 10 (edited) Gaga. Katy had a pretty good year too still in the Teenage Dream era, Britney's comeback wasn't as strong as but it still felt like a good and proper diva comeback. It was an amazing year! Honorable mention to Selena Gomez and her teen pop domination with When The Sun Goes Down. Who Says and Love You Like a Love Song are now memorable hits! Edited July 10 by Selegend 1 2
Virgos Groove Posted July 10 Posted July 10 (edited) Gaga would've, obviously. Adele stole her thunder. Who should've tho? Beyoncé. Edited July 10 by Virgos Groove 3 1

Pop rock was dead by 2011. Even many of the pop rock bands of the 2000s were on hiatus or switched sounds. 1

Sure it wasn't the most popular sound at the time but Avril was still having hits with it and some others too. 1

The disco-rock (Alternative Dance) sound was popular then. Kind of like the Katy I Kissed a Girl, Waking Up in Vegas sound. Guitar driver pop songs with eletropop beats. But by 2013 it was definitely dead until at least 2021. Edited July 10 by Raphy23

It was mostly pop/r&b that made her popular. Those acts were already established. And Avril was declining in popularity. That Avril song became a minor hit based on her fame everything after was no where near her popularity in the 2000s. Katy also made a departure from the pop rock sound. OFTB is very different from Teenage Dream. Yeah Teenage Dream has pop rock but it was going more towards electro beats.

Yeah, Jumping Trains had a lot of Pop and R&B and some little Pop Rock on the side that, true, maybe it wasn't the best sound to introduce the era but I do like it. The break up theme is kinda reminiscent of what people knew her for at that point which was Too Little Too Late. To remain on topic, I would have loved to see Gaga get that Adele kind of success too. I always felt like The Edge of Glory deserved to be huge.

UnusualBoy Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Gaga, didn't she have the 2nd biggest album of that year? And she was inescapable.
iHype. Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Everyone else's stats would still be the same? It's not like Adele smashing means Gaga, Katy, or Rihanna sold less as a result. Everyone who had success in 2011 would still have it, everyone who flopped in 2011 would've still. Them being one position higher weekly or on a Year-End doesn't completely reinvent the overall narrative. Born This Way was still pretty frontloaded and it would've still been seen as a start of a decline, public fatigue, and etc.

Erreur2 La Nature Posted July 10 Posted July 10 It would not have changed anything. Literally every popgirl released BOPS and smashed. Gaga had BTW, Edge Of Glory and even Judas to some extent. Rihanna had S&M (I think the previous singles were from 2010 ?) Britney had HIAM, TTWE, IWG. Katy had ET, Last Friday and TOTGA. Etc... all of them were popular and they all got their hits, it was a fantastic year.
