Do you think Beyonce/Taylor/Gaga are obligated to speak about Palestine?

I've seen a lot of tik toks and tweets chastising these artists for their past interactions with Israel or their general silence about Palestine. But do you think artists, especially artists who've had social justice ideas influence their music in the past, are obligated to speak up about what's happening in Palestine? I'm just wondering what the general consensus is on ATRL.

If I recall right, a decade ago there was the Tamil genocide but nobody except MIA spoke up about it. Not to mention there are other silent genocides happening today in places like Congo but nobody is putting pressure on celebrities to talk about those issues on the same level as Palestine… IMO it just seems hypocritical.

Nope they aren't and it's weird to have those expectations of anyone, #freepalestine

America exports so many dumb things, expecting celebrities to speak about every issue is one of them

I don't know, it's different when they speak about elections because they are from the US and it affects them, but if Netanyahu isn't willing to compromise with the US government he's not gonna bend to Gaga :skull:

I am trying to find the words to convey my thoughts but maybe I'm not the best writer but the Incessant demands asking celebrities to speak on every issue is weird, if Beyonce spoke out tomorrow people would find a reason to be mad about the timing of her support. Bey/Tay/gaga are singers and not advocates and making those demands of them is weird because it is not in their job description.

No. Simply because what I think most people have learned at this point is that whatever they do, it will never be enough in some people's eyes, so it's not worth it to even bother

No, not obligated.

But it would still be a good thing if they did.

Obviously not since they haven't. But even though it probably wouldn't make a huge impact, it would be nice for them to show they cared

I remember a day on twitter where people advocating for the freedom of Palestinian people allowing their ire for Beyonce not giving support overshadow what they were supposedly fighting for 💀

I mean, nobody's obligated, but I still think it's a good thing for popular figures to use their reach and platforms for good.

No. Only Rita Ora is obligated.

No one is obligated to speak about it if they don't want to do it.

No one is obligated to talk about anything, of course it would be nice if they did, but at the end of the day if you really care about a cause you don't need to wait until a celebrity talks about it to take action.

I think using an ongoing genocide to fuel stan wars is shameful.

I think every American does have an obligation to speak up about these matters, but this clamoring of these pop stars as opposed to politicians or people with more direct power is unproductive.

These people just want these pop stars to produce some performative statement that doesn't do anything just so years from now they can say that the pop star was on the right side of history (or to say the pop star was on the wrong side of history)
