Get rid of Best Original Song while they're at it and change it to Best Use of Music.

Ugh less acting awards then  :ace:

I hope they doesn't do it unlike Grammys and Emmys, they don't have like 50s categories.

They have exactly the right amount, doing this will unnecessary make it even more harder to secure a Oscars.

Highly doubt they would do it. Not only the backlash within the academy itself would be massive, but  the acting categories are probably the biggest viewership pull from the awards, the broadcasters would also rage.

With the current climate, this isn't shocking… I think if they change it at all these are their options.

1. create Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance… with 5-10 nominees in each category. The risk there is that the academy nominates more male than female performance each year.

2. Finally create a balloting system where actors/actresses can choose where to submit their performance. It would eliminate the possibility of the branch ignoring campaign strategies and forcing them to nominate the performer in the category they submitted in. That way if a nonbinary actor has the choice of which category they fit best into. Similar to what the Emmys already do.

Expand the existing nominations to:

Best Actor (Male or Nonbinary)

Best Actress (Female or Nonbinary)

And let NB people submit in either category

this might negatively affect women if they have to compete with men.

If their Best Director category is anything to go by, we can expect to not see female winner for a long time. :deadbanana4:

NO. No. No. No. no.

The gendered categories make the show more interesting and what will happen in reality is the men will now win all the awards and so many MORE women will be robbed of awards and nominations. It will have the completely opposite effect it intends to have.

The gendered categories are nice because it allows a greater spotlight specifically on amazing female actress performances so that, at minimum, we know a decent amount per year are getting their well due recognition.

This is social activism gone too far to the point it has the opposite effect of inclusivity and equality it intends to have. It's time for us to get real about this.

The difference between films directed by men and films directed by women differs greatly from the difference between films led by men and films led by women. Not a fair comparison at all.

The should definitely keep gender categories. If they want an overall separate one for anyone, that's perfectly fine but less acting categories means less opportunities and especially less opportunities for women. If this ends up materializing it's gonna get unpopular very quickly when men start winning them over and over again.

Not to mention less acting categories less opportunities for people to be seen, less big names campaign/attending, less attention, drop in ratings and so on.

Women usually give better performances than men but men would benefit from this :rip:

Well, let's use a practical case then. The Brits abolished their genders categories and right the next year, the only nominees for Best British Artist were men. :deadbanana4:

The directing and category might not be completely comparable, but it is true that the Academy rewards men more than women. There's no reason to believe things would go differently this time.

I have no idea what the Brits are. Some googling gives me results of music awards, which is a different industry. As far as the film industry goes, the Independent Spirit Awards have been using gender neutral categories for two years and the acting nominees were equally split. Of course it wouldn't turn out the same way with a larger voting body like the Academy, especially if the plan is to keep it down to five nominees, but it's not like everything has to be split in equal measure anyway. Matters even less for the acting categories, which are mostly composed of privileged millionaires who don't really need the attention a nominations brings to them.
