LCTV Posted June 19 Posted June 19 But like where is it? Do you think she just got a water drip in the pan of success or will she rebound.
ChooseyLover Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I was never extremely fond of Rihanna's music, I don't think her albums are that great aside from maybe ANTI and Rated R. I love Tyla's debut album, it's 100% cohesive, refreshing and very summery, fun but also introspective lyrics, and all in all she's the best Aaliyah inspired newcomer in the past few years. I can see the artistry, I can see the vision. Jump is just not my favourite single so I stopped checking until she comes up with something else, though. How is Fenty Hair doing anyway? 1 1 2
Alldeezy Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Tyla is mid and will NEVER be Rihanna. Nobody will ever replace Rihanna Tyla is her own person but doubt she's trying to be Rihanna tbh
ariesgroove Posted June 19 Posted June 19 people always pigeonhole new artists, like this site is literally arguing over whether chappell roan and sabrina carpenter are the children of katy & gaga let the new acts grow, tyla is doing great and i'm sure she'll continue to in the future 6 1
futuresuperstar2023 Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Look Rihanna was considered a poor man Beyonce in 2005 and 2006 and look where she is at now. I feel like Y'all are way too hateful towards these new artist. 5
Trent W Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I honestly see a lot of potential in her I feel her next album will be huge 2 2
toxicgenie Posted June 19 Posted June 19 The comparison is mostly for their beauty. They're both gorgeous and were very young when they started out. 2
popmusicisdead Posted June 19 Posted June 19 well the Rihanna we all know and love-hate didn't come about until her 3rd album, so we'll see ig
IBeMe Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Tyla is more akin to Cassie if anything. Pretty girl, nice vocal tone but dime a dozen. That tone is very generic. Rih was UNIQUE AF. From her voice to her look...the whole thing. Not to put Tyla down at all. She's a great up and coming artist. She just doesn't have the x factor and music to be a Main Popgirl (YET). 1
ICLDXU4HS Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Yeah, her tone turns me off from her and is the #1 reason I don't see it for her. Couldn't be more boring and bland.

I agree with the beauty part But Rihanna started at 16 and Tyla is already 22-23 I did think Tyla was like 17 until I searched the other day It sounds crazy but Rihanna was already huge at age 17 which is 5-6 years younger than Tyla In the pop world that's decades
Alex Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Quote "It's flattering because Rihanna is Rihanna. It's a compliment. But at the same time, I'm my own artist," explained the "Water" star to Cosmopolitan as its latest cover star. "I'm Tyla. And I know as people get to know me and my music, they will see me as just Tyla. So I'm fine with it now. People want to tie me to something familiar to them, cool." 1

I think the fact that they're both foreigners is also why they're often compared. But honestly, I feel like y'all are writing her off a little too soon just like how people did to Rih back then. Sometimes it takes a cool minute for someone to establish themselves and mark their spot.

Tbh Chappell's debut kinda gave One of the Boys by Katy

I don't even know why they're compared, must be because they're both pretty and black. People will downplay Tyla but she has a beautiful voice, she can dance, she writes her music, she comes up with her outfits and concepts of her videos. Her love for music is ignited. Rihanna is an icon but she's on a very different page (understandably), focused on things that I personally couldn't care less about. 1 1
cuteboyzay Posted June 19 Posted June 19 (edited) I never liked the comparisons between Tyla and Rihanna because partially they feel racially motivated. Especially knowing half of these comparisons are partially made by non-black people comparing the two. A lot of y'all only really want to compare them because they're both black making nearly the "same" genre of music. But it's not even the same either! They are literally incredibly different, just on stage presence ALONE. Tyla literally just had a relatively VERY successful debut and KNOWS her sound better than 99% of debut artists. And you can tell she takes advantage of every opportunity to promote and showcase her ability. She literally EXUUUDDESSS Star potentially and is very captivating in her performances too ngl. No one tried to make her the next Rihanna, a lot of y'all just put her in that box. Edited June 19 by cuteboyzay 2
TMRA Posted June 19 Posted June 19 It took Rihanna 3 albums to get the absolute smash aka Umbrella. I see a lot of potential in Tyla. Hot, pretty, talented, can perform well, already had her iconic fashion moment at Met Gala etc. I just hope she plays her cards right and evolves with her upcoming music releases like rih did. If she keeps releasing island pop summer breeze music forever than it aint happening
