Why did The One That Got Away become such a classic?

Katy Perry's sixth single from the album Teenage Dream became one of her biggest classics. The song has 1.2B streams on Spotify (og + acoustic combined) and is one of the favorite songs of the new generation of pop stars to cover.

Usually it's the lead, the second or the third single that become classics, but Katy did that with her sixth single. How did she manage to achieve such an impressive feat with this song?

When a ballad is done right it ages like a fine wine.

Katy got herself a 1962 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti with TOTGA.

The GP prefers relatable / sad songs in the end, that's why

everyone I know knows this classic :cries:

When you have an album filled with smash hit material even your sixth single will become a classic. Just look at MJ and his album Bad

From the lyrics to the melody, production and vocals it's a perfectly mastered song that excels both as pop song AND ballad :clap3:

It's an incredible song with beautiful lyrics resonating with everyone. Given GP's choices sometimes, I'm almost shocked that it's appreciated the way it is.

Has she ever performed this song non-acoustically?

Because she had already released 5 classics prior, so she released a sixth for a little razzle dazzle.

It truly is a great song. I'm impressed and very pleased to see how well it has stood the taste of time and is still remembered to this day.

The video was brilliant as well. It helped for sure.

I wish thinking of you would see more of this type of appreciation too. That one is sadly quite underrated.

The One That Got Away and Thinking Of You are my two absolute favorite Katy songs. Timeless classics :clap3:

It's interesting how everyone seems to perform the acoustic slow version of the song. I guess it fits into the sad girl aesthetic.

Also I love the MV, which reached a billion views on Youtube!
