smartalek22 Posted June 10 Posted June 10 I feel like the average song from 2020 and 2024 could literally sound the same and be of its era Whereas the average song from 2010 to 2014 sounds completely different from each other, like there has been a defined progression in music. Or is this just me 1
Sailor Moon Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Most artists are not looking for an "innovative" sound anymore, they just stick to trends .. pop-rock, synths. 7

Punky Rooster Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Streaming killed innovation, the shorter the song and the more filler on 51 track albums means more "sales".

Wicked Posted June 10 Posted June 10 (edited) For the mainstream yeah, cause mainstream artists probably more scared than ever to go against the grain. People giving the same sonics and aesthetics it's boring as ****. There's new microgenres but they don't really go far, the average listener is not that receptive to "weird" music, or something unlike what they've heard before as they may have been in decades past. Johnny Jacobs Posted June 10 Posted June 10 No. It's just very boring. The rush of pop culture of 2000-2013 is long gone. Streaming ruined everything. Charts. Stats. Traditional promo and hustling. Less money to artists = them turning to other profitable businesses. 4 1
Meev Posted June 10 Posted June 10 I feel that when you look at the evolution of music, you need to take Taylor out of the equation. Taylor's music is popular because she is popular, so songs that she put out will be huge, but this cannot be replicated by other singers. However if you look at the top 20 songs in 2020 and top 20 songs in 2024, there is quite a huge difference. The biggest 2020 female songs are DSN, Say So, Savage and WAP. The biggest female songs this year are Greedy, Snooze, Agora Hills, PTTR and Water. I feel that looking at these songs, there is a significant style shift of the songs, and that is probably where female pop is heading. As for music outside of female pop, the likes of Blinding Lights, Circles and The Box of 2020 seems to also be different to the Lose Control, Living on Me and Beautiful Things of 2024. 3

Polgg48 Posted June 10 Posted June 10 (edited) i could rumbling all day about the topic but mainstream casual just want easy melodic music to enjoy rather than explore other genres. 'bongo' is another example but gp simply refuse dembow and its hierarchy. Edited June 10 by Polgg48
king_queen Posted June 10 Posted June 10 (edited) More black people are finding recognition in country music, this year alone, thanks to Cowboy Carter. Let's not forget. This is real, tangible progress idc what y'all say Edited June 10 by king_queen
Lasso Posted June 10 Posted June 10 i'm sure some people thought the same about the early 2010s. it can be hard to discern what makes each year stand out as we live through them, but things usually fall into place after a while
Chemist Posted June 10 Posted June 10 i feel like it's still evolving. Billie Eilish, PinkPantheress and Charli XCX are trying new stuff every time they release something If you are talking about the top 10 then I guess so
Kevin Parker Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Music is always evolving. Alternative artists have been carrying it for some years now...
ATRL Moderator Element Posted June 10 ATRL Moderator Posted June 10 Each decade has had a defined sound/cultural aesthetic, but I feel like the 2020s is just a collage of all previous decades as we cycle through nostalgia at a rapid pace. Maybe we've run out of ideas. We are in the era of reboots and throwback trends. 3
Batsy Armada Posted June 12 Posted June 12 Artists are just generally afraid to take risks. Image, for many, is more important than the music itself. And that's unfortunate. Something is going to have to shake sooner or later, though. There's really nothing exciting happening in mainstream music, as it relates to sound and influence.
Alldeezy Posted June 12 Posted June 12 yes I feel like most music sound too alike these days or the radio only sticks to one genre. I miss the 2000s when the Radio would play a rock song then a pop song then rnb now it's just the same Expresso kinda song or mumble/whisper singers
Gesamtkunstwerk Posted June 12 Posted June 12 It's hard to tell, the way we listen to music has changed in just 10-15 years. We all have streaming services now, completely tailored to our specific taste, and radio and "mainstream" music can't really compete with that. To appease as many people as possible, they have to push the safest music and artists there is, unfortunately
