I didn't hear anything about charts though. Britney, Adele, Zayn and Lana are probably the only ones who truly don't care about charts.

 

what he said about caring how people receive the music via concerts is true though.
 

Of course people want their work to sell but the chart obsession is silly and unhealthy. so many amazing songs never even reach the top spot yet become iconic classics

I think almost every artist does care about their music. I'm sure they want to create quality art. However, not all artists focus their creative process and thrill of music making on catering to radio/commercial success. While some like Ed and friends, believe being #1 for weeks and dominating the radio is the pinnacle what an artist can achieve, there are others out there who are able to find fulfillment and happiness from within. They don't rely on blocking newer artists or jetting around on tour for 365 days to collect an obscene amount of wealth. They are able to find joy in life through other avenues such as family and friends. Most of these mature artists have outgrown the petty childish mentality most of their stans exhibit where they only thing that matters is the stats versus the quality

Britney's the only artist of the past 30 years who I genuinely believe doesn't care about the charts, or awards for that matter. Most of the others though, I dunno.

my faves clearly don't care for charts they just do it because they enjoy it and love to spoil there small fanbases.

If he means mainstream artists, maybe. If he's talking about artists in general, then no. Even with perception, plenty of smaller artists don't get reviews, how will they know how they're perceived (outside of the people who support them via streaming etc.)? Some people do it for fun/self-expression and don't get discouraged by the lack of success.

He's right and he should say it. This new trend of stans bragging about their faves not caring while they relase sped up and slowed down versions of their albums and have their husbands meltdown on the Grammy stage saying they deserve an aoty award is so embarrassing.
