Finished the audio book.

its sad how she doesn't like most of her music. Most of her singles she released she doesn't like. She doesn't like ML (which I could kinda tell). It's surprising how little control she had with who much she writes her music. She seems to only like her 2 mixtapes, TNTTAI, and most recently her first two albums after re-recording them

after listening to the book I can see why she didn't re-record jumping trains. 1. I don't think she can because it sounds like she can only cover music previously released. Also it sounds like she didn't even like that music anyways so why remake it. Still hope it leaks

the book was really good. I wish she was a bigger artist cause this would make a good biopic

What does ML stand for? :rip:

EDIT: Oh Mad Love dd :rip:

Been listening to this audio book. I skipped to jumping trains era and listened from there cause I wanted to know more about that era. At mad love. Going to go forward then listen to her childhood

the producer she slept with in the studio was likely danja. 1. He looks like her type also he called himself the next Timbaland which he was Timbaland co producer. They recorded an album worth of material and released sexy to me

the guy she cheated on that was a friend is likely Austin brown. She alludes to him being from and important family Austin is Michael Jackson's nephew. They no longer follow each other (likely why were never getting agape on streaming)

I tried to search the DaIntern guys and see if they were hospitalized back then lmao but I guess it's Danja indeed. He was on a high back then with Keri Hilson. I wish at least he did something decent for Jo. I remember when Sexy to Me came out. It was one of the many times I felt the album was really coming out and it didn't.

I'm still listening to the audiobook. I think she'd already made super clear before that she isn't connected to the to BG albums and that even ML was another compromise.

Good to Know and TNTTAI are the true albums she wanted to make and release.

Her narrative has been very consistent since the beginning. As someone who doesn't come from a privileged upbringing, commercial success was a main goal for her. Then, not being to release music became a jeopardy not only to her financial income but to her well-being.

She made a lot of albums but since none of them were released she never got to test the waters and get the feedback from the audience.

When she finally released the album she felt confident about (GTK) we had a pandemic, etc etc.

I think she expected at least some peer recognition (at least a Grammy nom) and when that didn't come she got frustrated. Idk if she wrote about that in detail. Can't wait to the to it.

I hope things align for her with the next single 🙏🏽

What does she say about her?

Their relationship was complicated. Gita was more like a mom, cleaning her dirty laundry, even covering or splitting some bills. However, their relationship faded away within the years. Gita belittled her a lot, especially diminishing Jo's capacity to mold her own sound.

it was sad to read how much her mom was/is there for her but at the same time, she was weaponizing her own life in order to get back at Jo... ugh I relate to that so much. Addiction is no joke. Glad they could overcome everything and now it seems they're in good terms.

Finished the audio book. It was so empowering. In the outro she was finishing off the script in new Zealand fresh off the Aus/NZ festival shows where I got to see her for the first time ever when she commented on my IG post of the photos I took from that show the morning after. Felt so warm

I have receipts which say 7k copies were sold in a week. But keep seething, babes.

Spoiler

Just to clarify in case anyone thinks I'm throwing shade - to be a NYT bestseller, you need to sell between 5-10k in the first week!

I just finished the book. So very good, captivating the whole way through. It reminds me a lot of The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

I wish she went into a bit more detail into THR era; what happened to "Anything" being the 3rd single? Coming for You and Let it Rain should have been the 4th and 5th singles. So many good songs on that album, one of the best pop/rnb albums of 2000s.

Anything got linked release in Europe.

There's a radio promo cd out there for coming for you in France I think but got canned

I do recall her fansite having a poll for the next single.

I wish there be more music specific stuff in the book confirming stuff like this. I love  The high road much more than the debut and it was glossed over kinda

Although she didn't directly address this, it seems like How To Touch A Girl flopping, Vincent disappearing, Barry losing interest and her mother already looking for a way out of the industry seems to have been a perfect storm for the The High Road era ending prematurely. She had nobody in her corner pushing for her.

Anything actually reached #21 in the UK with no music video so that alone should have sparked more attention.

Congrats to her on making the bestsellers list. Hopefully this success will also allow her to write another book in the future on the music industry. I presume some things (like this era) were glossed over due to length/repetition.

When the Times believes a book has reached the list in a suspicious way—such as through bulk purchases—the book's entry on the list is marked with a dagger symbol (†).

just picked this up from the library earlier and already 100 pages in. so interesting to get all the tea about the debut years and how they molded her image.

reading this along with seeing Demi's recent doc makes me really feel for the parents of these kids bc they have NO idea what they're getting into or how to handle the business. the naivety is not their fault at all but it must be so hard seeing yoir kid go through the industry this way

The High Road era had some much more legs to grow. Ugh, How To Touch A Girl was the wrong choice in the first place to follow-up already a very successful ballad. Good Ol, Coming For You and Anything really deserved a strong push. But we could go on forever about JoJo's missed opportunities. Just so happy to see where she is at now, independent, broadway star and a NYT best seller. So happy for her!!!
