Jotham Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Less than half of Amsterdam young people accept homosexuality Quote Research by the Dutch health service GGD shows that the acceptance of LGBT+ people is drastically reduced among young people. The numbers from Amsterdam do not lie. Only 43 percent of young people say they accept homosexuality, while two years ago it was 69 percent. Among boys, only a third of homosexuality find acceptable, while of the girls roughly half of them have this opinion. The survey was conducted among young people aged 13 to 16. Although the decline is dramatic, the figures fit in the image that Amsterdam is becoming an increasingly unsafe place for gay people to walk hand in hand on the street. There are regular incidents of anti-LGBT+ violence in the news. For example, there have been incidents of violence in the LGBT+ night area, the Reguliersdwarsstraat, a drag queen in public transport has been attacked, Pride flags were burned and a gay couple was frequently faced with violence by a group of young people. Acceptance figures in other Dutch regions are also declining. In Utrecht, the acceptance of homosexuality fell from 71 percent (in 2019) to 46 percent. For example, transgender acceptance in the province of Zeeland is falling sharply. Two years ago, 46 percent of young people found trans people "normal", now that is only a quarter. The percentage of young people who find trans people "wrong" in the province also has increased from 13 to 25 percent. Original source (translated)

Rev8 Posted May 29 Posted May 29 How many people were surveyed? not surprising in recent years tho, everything has been going to **** 1
KatyPrismSpirit Posted May 29 Posted May 29 From where I'm from I can confirm this is true sadly. Employees from a drag bar got beaten up, pride flags in the city get burned and spray painted over, theres a lot of violent incidents regarding trans people especially, and gays on the street too. Something changed post covid. 6
Johnny Jacobs Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Not me thinking 43% is good. It surely is Better than whatci experienced
Cain Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Living in Amsterdam I haven't experienced any drastic change but everyone's been talking about it yeah, at this point I'm just kinda waiting for something to happen it's sad 1
GraceRandolph Posted May 29 Posted May 29 There's always an ebb and flow of movements unfortunately. There's also a certain subset of people who will always hold reactionary views. 1 1

These don't surprise me as it is expected and we need to fight them back, but the pick me gays that reproduce their discourse as if they are not potential victims of it is truly disturbing for me as a LGBTQIA+ person 9 1
Anthinos Posted May 29 Posted May 29 This is so sad but unfortunately not surprising. It's the same here in Germany. It's becoming more and more normal, especially among young heterosexual men. You can't point the finger at "wokeness" either. It's obvious that many people, especially young people, actually hate us and this is their political opinion. Where will the journey take us? Will society become more tolerant again? Is it just a phase? Where are we safe? I for one will not hide and I will continue to live openly and authentically. If people hate or hit me for it, then so be it. They can hit me, hurt me or do worse, but they can't control my free soul. 14

Orsay Posted May 29 Posted May 29 13-16 year olds.. hm. There's such a strong hard right conservative streak among late gen z and gen alpha kids. But 27 year old progressives continue to see moderate liberals as their biggest enemy... 9 3
ForgottenSoul Posted May 29 Posted May 29 (edited) I honestly think its the wording of the question tbh but either way sad times that the west is moving more right wing and extreme. Edited May 29 by ForgottenSoul
Gwendolyn Posted May 29 Posted May 29 And it's going to keep getting worse and worse as Europe continues to vote in more far-right governments who don't give a flying **** about LGBTQ+ rights and helped contribute to this by fanning the flames of this culture war. I recommended we all learn more self-defence and continue to support LGBTQ+ businesses, educators who are pushing for better LGBT education in schools and vote for parties who will do something to combat this. 2
Twixters Posted May 29 Posted May 29 (edited) It's cause majority of their parents are gen x. Gen x is the most successible to all this right wing propoganda and their kids hear it from them. Once they grow up and touch grass and see the real world they will change. It's cool to be "anti woke" right now Edited May 29 by Twixters 2
slimfem Posted May 29 Posted May 29 So where is safety? If someone were seeking asylum for being gay, where would you go? Denmark? Malta?
RT Air Posted May 29 Posted May 29 (edited) It's a global trend sadly, whenever living conditions get shitter (e.g. inflation, wars, and cost of living crisis rn), society takes its frustration out on marginalized groups and people are less keen to accept anything that doesn't align with their world view. I know the survey was made among young people, but I doubt they made up their mind on this topic themselves, it's obvious that they were exposed to homophobia that made them think this way. I mean you say that but the far right in Denmark say were protecting LGBTQ rights by hating Islam that is the arguement they use. I dont think many parties run on anti LGBTQ platforms because its not popular at all.
Pendulum Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Not surprising knowing half of Dutch youth are wannabe hypermasculine gangsters. But then the other half are rich white privileged fraternity people that are just as trashy. 1
simplywohoo Posted May 29 Posted May 29 I think we have to accept that the public will get divided severely in the next few years Homophobia is getting more and more prominent and so is racism. I think it's inevitable that there will develop several groups that will mostly keep to themselves. I notice this in Germany. The afd, a nazi Party, is getting more and more re cognition. Many stopped fighting and just accepted it and started to distance themselves. We can't change others mentality and with more right wing parties rising, people don't see the need to lie about their ideology anymore.
