If "Witness" hadn't flopped, would Taylor still have made amends with Katy in 2019?

As we know, Katy Perry was on a massive career high from 2010 to 2014, a period of time in which she racked up numerous #1 singles & albums and smashed records left and right.  At the time, Taylor was just beginning to veer into pop music, having released Red in 2012 (her first pop-leaning record) and 1989 in 2014, the first album where she went "full pop."

After the latter singles from Prism failed to make as much of an impact on the charts as the prior Teenage Dream singles did, Katy began to spiral, going so far as to chop off half her hair, giving her a more butch, Ellen DeGeneres-influenced aesthetic, which sent the gays running for the hills.   After releasing multiple flop singles in a row (Chained to Prism, Boner Petit, Swift Swift), she finally dropped her 5th studio album, titled Whiteness.  Although the album did have a decent chart position initially, it didn't have nearly as much longevity as Teenage Dream did, leading many to call it a "flop."

But let's re-imagine history for a moment.  What if Witness had had the same levels of success as Teenage Dream (several back-to-back #1 singles + high album sales + chart longevity).  If that had happened, do you think Taylor still would have extended an olive branch to Katy in 2019, when she pity-invited her to join the You Need to Calm Down music video?

Discuss, and keep it Kyoto

What kind of fanfic is this?

no, she wouldn't have. Taylor does not acknowledge competition. only former legends or flopped artists. but the jokes on taylor since Katy is now happily married with a child, finally got back that smile.

Imagine if Swish Swish became a massive hit during Taylor's reputation era. :rip:

Lover and Folkmore would've never existed, and we might get Midnights right after rep instead. lol.

nnn if Swish Swish had been a hit, Taylor would've fired back again, and who ******* knows where things would be for her (except noticeably worse lol):gaycat6:

The only reason they're friends again is because Katy reached out with a literal olive branch at the start of the Reputation world tour. Otherwise, Taylor probably wouldn't have forgiven her 💀 I love Taylor but the whole Bad Blood situation is something she handled extremely poorly. Getting all your model friends to star in a music video where you're going to war/trying to fight a Katy Perry-esque character while spending every interview during that era going on and on about how your girl group and how feminism is so important? Please 😵‍💫

I think she would have. The question should actually be the other way around. If Witness was successful, would Katy had made up with Taylor?

There's nothing to 'forgive' if you yourself are the one who started the "feud" in the first place over something so trivial like "stealing backup dancers" (which wasn't even a true reason at the end and Katy already had a clause in her contract that they were gonna go back to the Prismatic Tour after a period of time). She just needed an excuse to take Katy out of the equation so she could be the biggest female popstar in the world and dominate the airwaves with no competition, so she concocted something that people were naturally gonna speculate and gossip about. It was basically an attempt at character assassination but trying to be subtle like "bbbut I didn't mention any names!" (but you did give very specific details though lol)

OT: Taylor might be a savvy businesswoman, but that girl is still stuck in a teenage mindset. Even now she's trying "eliminate the threat" by trying to steal much younger female artists' spotlights, so there was no way she would have made amends with Katy in 2019 if KP was still a big musical force in the mainstream pop world. Also let's not forget that it was Katy who actually reached out to make amends publicly, Taylor wasn't even mature enough to take initiative to let that shite go, something that she started btw. Her fans might lie to themselves, but we see through miss Swift.

Didn't mean to write an essay but thought I'd give my two cents in the context lmao.

there would never be a time and space where Witness wouldn't flop

katy was the one who sent an olive branch so i dont think she would've sent one if witness hadn't flopped. but i also think that she would've milked this feud the same way she did during witness.

besides, can we acknowledge that bad blood didn't affect katy's career that much, if not at all.

if taylor is canceled party didn't work, i doubt taylor could end anyone's career with such an awful song and ridiculous beef :ryan3:

I stan both, but the Bad Blood mini era was embarrassing for Taylor. She was clearly at fault and she was reaching with all that drama and the mv and her interviews at the time.

Katy was the biggest pop star back then, so a feud between the two obviously kept them on the spotlight, something that Taylor needed in 2014 to gain more star power! For me it was all PR from TS-side.

Oh please, Katy was not the biggest popstar back then. Despite her singles success, her album sales and tours just cannot compete with her peers.

And Taylor needs more star power in 2014?!? In her literal 1st imperial phase? Lol I have to laugh.

Probably not, or at least probably not so publicly. Katy definitely wouldn't have cared much to make amends if she had stayed as successful.

Also, this was the lamest pop girl feud. The reason behind it was so boring and one-sided and only made Taylor seem like the white woman that makes herself the victim of nothing all the time.

Are you kidding? PRISM was the best selling album by a female artist in 2013 and the Prismatic World Tour was HUGE. She was the biggest woman in music for that (admittedly short) time period.

'Ellen DeGeneres-influenced aesthetic' :deadbanana2:

Taylor was also on the downslide in 2019, ending the feud added more buzz to the YNTCD mv.
