Is anyone seeing an influx of homophobic and transphobic things across social media?

Only a few years ago, this would've been taboo to talk about; with the rise of facism and discrimination, I'm starting to worry Gen Z is becoming increasingly intolerant. 1 million+ likes on trans and homophobic tiktoks should be raising alarm bells, I'm hearing my own coursemates parrote transphobic jokes and I'm surprised that people think this gen is that progressive.

It's just the Andrew Tate effect.

Yes, and it's one of the main reasons I stopped using TikTok. The FYP is the worst. If I'm not recommended homophobic content, then it's racism or transphobia with thousands of people cheering in the comments. I'm tired.

yes it is. I'm not saying we should blame LGBT people but I think we should have never normalized making self hate jokes so popular, especially on an app like tiktok, where people copy and paste what others say.. thinking they have a right to say the same things. transphobic and homophobic jokes, harassing any man who shows any kind of femininity (and I know atrl loves doing this as well) and more are some of the stuff I see on that app almost daily and it is worrying because we're going backwards.

Such an interesting point. It's almost like we got so comfortable with progress that we forgot to love and endorse ourselves as a community.

It's not exactly a suprise I saw this coming years ago

I think it's more about older generations "fight back" and less about Gen Z. According to studies nearly 40% of Gen Z Americans identify as LGBT+, and a lot older people feel threatened by the growing acceptance of queer people, so this is them trying to "fight back" as I have said before.

Anyway, f*ck them

The LGB are guilty by association because of the T and wouldn't be under such a microscope if it weren't for the current wave of trans rights that's going on (and no I'm not transphobic). Then you've got the current discourse on gender (which is ridiculous imo) and that just reflects badly on everybody

But these kids also need to go outside and touch some grass. Because I can't remember the last time I witnessed this be an actual issue for somebody in real life

When you make any kind of progress and a group becomes more accepted, the number of people who hate that group starts to shrink. Bigots can feel the walls closing in on them and are screaming as loud as possible to try and fight against it.

Like if you go back even 10-15 years ago, there were barely any LBGT characters on film and TV, so homophobes and transphobes had nothing to complain about. Now that representation is that much better, they're voicing the opinions they've been keeping quiet this whole time because now they feel threatened.

Also a lot of these tiktoks and the associated likes and comments are from children and teenagers who haven't grown up yet. It doesn't matter how far we come as a society, being "different" as a teenager will never be acceptable to the cool kids. Most people grow out of the over the top conformism by the time they reach adulthood.

I actually think I've seen less than before, but the only social media I use are Reddit and YouTube.

There's also the fact that Gen Alpha and younger Gen Z'ers have no recollection of what society was like before queer rights were accepted (in Western societies). Remember that cringy-but-necessary "gay is okay/Same Love/it's okay to wear pink" phase? Yeah, we might need to do that all over again. :dies:

We need an updated version of this with Tate, Olivia or Sabrina!

It's interesting actually because back when I was on twitter I wasn't seeing anything like this until Elon took over. Then suddenly I was being shown so much right wing nonsense and tweets about topics I was completely opposed to. It's almost as if they started showing people tweets they knew they'd disagree with to provoke them into arguments to drive up engagement. I wonder if tiktok has started doing the same thing.

It's always been there. The Spanish/Mexican side of tiktok is so much worse. What's interesting though, is that social media has blurred reality indefinitely... like if you go out in the real world, support for LGBT people is not exactly thriving.

Well the pushed content on twitter is mainly from right leaning people since they're more commonly purchasing blue check marks, that in combination of all social media algorithms trying to get engagement off of things that would make you mad. It's not the antiqueerness being more common either it's just that vocal minority being louder than ever because they're disappearing.

Not really. I remember back in 2018 when people Stan Twitter used the word that rhymes with cigarettes :biblionny:I think the situation has improved a lot compared to the early 2000s. Haters are gonna hate I guess. Also, Twitter is the new 4Chan so don't be surprised by the blatant homophobia and transphobia. Tiktok is from people all over the world so it also includes very conservative countries.
