Id say yes. In metrics at least. Dunno about the public perception/image as GOAT tho

Yes, Cate's recent filmography is much stronger than Meryl's recent filmography. Meryl also relied more on PR whereas Cate just slays without the pomp and circumstance.

I feel like the GeePee will still love Meryl more. Cate comes off as arrogant and sees herself too highly to be considered as a critically acclaimed GeePee darling. she is also very shady

Nope.

Until I see a Sophie's Choice, A Cry in the Dark, or Bridges Over Madison County from Blanchett, she will not compare. Meryl is the Queen of Accents.

As talented and beloved as Cate is she hasn't reached Meryl's level of ubiquity; Meryl's name has become shorthand for great acting.

Meryl is known for delivering THE best acting performance of 20th century in Sophie's Choice. I don't think Cate has done anything of that magnitude yet (or will, probably).

i can see it happening if Meryl Streep decides to retire sooner and Cate continuing her career for longer than Meryl does

Cate has more iconic film roles than Meryl. Let's be real half of Meryl roles are completely forgotten despite the awards/noms over the years.

Not in my book. Meryl is synonymous with top tier acting.

I've always found Cate to be a much more compelling actress though Meryl is truly exceptional as well. idk...it's tough to say tbh. If Cate keeps at her trajectory she might be contender to take Meryl's coveted spot but it will prob take another decade of consistently excellent acting performances

Cate is absolutely fantastic and deserves all he recognition. But Meryl just feels like more of a household name and there's a reason you're asking "if" she can be surpassed.

She already has, though that Borderlands movie coming up is looking like it'll be a stain in an otherwise amazing body of work by Cate the last 10 years.

Meryl's myth has been pierced a bit, she got way too many Oscars nominations unnecessarily thrown at her and that was the main reason her hype as best actress ever came to be. If you look at her filmography and performances the last 20 years, they're pretty weak. Any other actress could give performances like Florence Foster Jenkins, Into The Woods,... and wouldn't even get so much as a sniff at a nomination. Meryl's industry support is also huge, studios literally get lukewarm received films released earlier in the year re-released closer to awards season just for Meryl's chance at an Oscar nom..

No shade to Cate but she doesn't have a role as iconic as Miranda Priestly

Maybe in metrics but not in public perception, at least for another decade or so. Meryl is synonymous with great acting, she's the Queen of Acting in ATRL terms.

She could surpass her with awards and noms but Meryl's impact/fame can never be surpassed

her name alone is just too iconic

Nah, the tides have turned and she's seen as an overrated industry thing, "Harvey Weinstein is god" etc. People are over her and her ridiculous Oscar nomination tally.

Meryl STEEP decline.

No. Probably Emma Stone can do it someday

Meryl Streep is able to completely erase Meryl as she becames the character, even on small roles like the OMITB one. I still see a bit of Cate on her roles

Cate is great but I think Julianne Moore has more chances than her. I also think that Angelina Jolie could achieve that level.

Meryl is the Madonna of acting while Cate is Taylor Swift with talent. So yeah number wise she can surpass Meryl but not in public perception, at least for now or in the next few years. Who knows about the longer future.
