Are we addicted to music?

Recommended Posts

Just watched a video of this girl who tried not listening to any music for 3 months. She cited a lot of sources, but the main points are:

- We tend to use music to numb our emotions & avoid actually having to process our feelings. E.g. dancing to happy songs when you're sad; listen to depressing songs when you're slightly inconvenienced & "romanticize(?)" your sadness (tbh I did this with Lana's songs when I was younger :gaycat6:)

- Having 24/7 access to music on your device means we often do not pay attention to our surroundings (like listening to/watching nature) or the people around us anymore

- She advises against doing this for more than 2 months because in the 3rd month she started talking to herself to fill in the silence :chick2: And also in the future she will keep listening, but only during activities that are too boring without music (like working out)

I recently realized that I cannot open my laptop to work/study without also playing music in the background, like I would feel jittery without it :dancehall:

Do you guys think we've become addicted to music? Please discuss!

(bonus question: if music detox becomes a trend, will our pop girls become jobless? :biblionny:)

We absolutely are but I used to be worse when I was studying. Never took out my earphone for HOURS on. It prevented me from creating friends at some point in uni as I avoided everyone just to listen to music. Travelling for HOURS home without even once taking my earphone.

I stopped listening to music a while back just to "cleanse" myself as i felt it was affecting me negatively. I'm alot better now. But there's no way I'm driving without loud music I just cannot do it.

Yes, what's the problem.

Although I will say it is good to meet up with a friend or 2 to take a walk because then you don't have any music while you chat so you notice things around you. I meet up with my best friend every Sunday we go on hikes by the river and it's great to get disconnected for the day.

Someone would have to cut off my head before I do something crazy like not listen to music for 3 months wtf

Yes I'm addicted and I'm fine with it. I get annoyed when I'm listening to music at work and someone comes to interrupt me. Leave me alone!

Let me be honest. I am here on ATRL but seriously I am not addicted to music. I actually only put music on when I drive the car. Other than that, I hardly listen to any music. Maybe yeah a bit when I am jogging. But when I work, study, cook, surf the internet, I prefer silence. Too much music can actually drive me crazy.

I think this is part of a larger issue of how we are addicted to over stimuli.

I think so. That's why I'm only trying to listen Just For Fun. And not to numb myself :gaycat5:

I remember in high school people would say not to listen to music while you're studying because it puts you in a completely different headspace compared to when you're sitting an exam and it's dead silent the whole time

its interesting to think about, especially in regards to distracting yourself from thinking, but sometimes music helps me process my emotions rather than distract me from them. The cathartic release while singing/sobbing to "Unwritten" is unmatched tbh.
I typically find the music I listen to definitely feels like it represents my current mood/headspace really well, and it helps to be able to reflect on why I relate to them so much.
sometimes music is also very helpful in the sense, being able to hear someone else

relate and express an emotion that you yourself can relate too is comforting too.

I think it depends on the person tbh, obviously people on this forum will probably relate too these ideas more because.. they care enough about music to be on a forum like this. There must be a level of obsession to it, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. There's also people who don't really listen to music at all, and they probably enjoy nature sounds or their thoughts(some people Don't have an inner monologue and I can't relate to that) or whatever they do with their free audio time who could probably benefit to actually listen to music more or more purposefully

like everything else there's a healthy medium and balance, it totally relies on the individual to just do what works for them in the context of their own lives

(I'm sorry for the ramble I'm v high rn)

i literally just had that thought today. i ALWAYS have my headphones on when i go outside so i never hear any surrounding noises and i only take them off when i'm with my friends or in class. i also listen to music at home. i first started to notice this when i realized i barely heard the cicadas last summer. but i also realized that literally everybody on the street had noise cancelling headphones or airpods…

Personally I can't listen to music for ages and ages. Like even if I'm sat at home working, after about an hour of music I get tired of it and just work in silence. If I actually need to focus on something I find music distracting.

I used to be the same. I hated airpods or anything that went into my ears so I never had music on transit or at the gym (only in the car). But then I got my boss headphones and now that has changed. I will say it took a lot of getting used too, as it felt like I lost my sense of hearing for my surrounding which made me uncomfortable at first.

Tbh I haven't been listening to music as much lately as I used to in the past. Now I usually only put in my earphones and listen to music when I'm taking a walk or on a long bus ride.

I feel the same, but instead of music, I play a twitch/youtube stream just to have someone talking in the background. I can't stand the silence. :ninja:

I couldn't even go a day without listening to music. Even as a kid I had my little boombox and carried it everywhere with me around the house. Even to my little cubby house

I know for sure I am. I have literal cravings to listen to music. There's nothing I love more than just putting my headphones on and letting the music take me away. No matter how I'm feeling, music always puts me in a state of euphoria—whether I'm happy, mad, sad, etc.
