They're very melo though and a feel good cry.

If you want like "sad" sad, then there's

I loved Korean films when I was younger. Too bad I'm not up-to date anymore.

Two Masterpieces. Cloud Atlas can get existential and tear jerky at times.

Of course there are various super sad movies, but I'm gonna mention one notable for me this time: It's not technically a movie but if you play Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars season finale (from episode 194 to 200), it runs like a movie and that was from the saddest I've got from watching a feature length type of film. It's like The Lion King/Bambi/Toy Story 3/Up introduction/Iron Giant intricate animated narrative level (with its lightfulness and sadness) but make it Hunger Games/Vanilla Sky/Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind/Her/Battle Royale/Kairo(Pulse).

You just gotta leave it to a team of snatched supergirls serving while fighting the Apocalyse. On the level of the hardest dramas with a poignant level of tragedy.

Spoiler

There are more (quantity) hard hitters than the ones I'll mention but I get supremely sad in these scenes:

Sailor Moon's lonely fight with Sailor Tin Nyanko later assisted by Sailor Star Fighter.

Sailor Uranus and Neptune biggest attack to Sailor Galaxia and the aftermath.

Also, I can't sleep for a night at the Inner Sailors last portrayed transformation knowing their destiny soon after that when I go full-on to watch it again. Yeah, I like to ruin my heart with misery with traumatizingly sad movies re-watching them, it kinda gives the intensity of true love in danger and the urge to save it, fear of losing it all even when you're already f*cked up and hope in the midst of catastrophe at the same time. It's kinda like horror level of intensity (which SM:SS also has) but make it a hardcore drama so instead of feeling extremely scared you feel extremely on the edge of PTSD-emotional misery and depression.

Bonus: I'm sure if Serena/Usagi was more of a brain so better into academics and/or literature, she would feel like Clara Bow at her lively dream when she thought she didn't have to face the Apocalypse when Uranus/Neptune snapped.

Visual/Plot spoilers

Sailor Uranus/Neptune facing their love apocalypse for daring chaos.

Sailor Tin Nyanko going to the telephone cabin virtual portal after her last lone fight with Sailor Moon in which she half-cured her evil possesion and made her recognize love and justice and betray evil and help the Sailors, something that 'caused her demise.

Serena/Usagi crying after her last fight with Sailor Tin Nyanko, she feels lonely because the love of her life (Tuxedo Mask) is in another country (allegedly). Seiya (Sailor turned star artist) consoles her and asks her to be her boyfriend.

Anywho, watch it to see how it's like to fight the apocalypse serving looks, giving hardcore choreo/performance and being gangsta at the same time!
