Poor Dua. She can't even be the star of her own flopped era.

Let me give a (1) stream for her sake.

@mods the title of this thread should be changed. Reviews are still for the most part positive, or mixed at a stretch, but a panned album would be something completely different.

It's currently the 6th lowest ranked album on MC released this year :deadbanana:

The album sucks and it's what she gets for giving us that trash. Release better music next time Dula!

Mixed reception ≠ panned. If a score above 70 (which the album had when this thread was created, and which it most definitely will surpass again as more reviews are published) equals "panned", then that would mean the vast majority of pop music ever released was panned, which obviously is not the case. Words do have meaning.

A 70 in 2024 is like 50 in early 2010s... BFFR, it's at the bottom of the scores this year :deadbanana2: the coping is hard

Publications saw more clicks on their websites and more engagements when they are lukewarm / negative on pop stars I fear.

Didn't she say the album was inspired by Primal Scream, Massive Attack and the UK rave scene or am I making this up? And then had the nerve to go ahead and release whatever the **** this is. She deserves to be panned for that alone.

Haven't listened yet but from what it looks like, most of the mixed/negative reviewers are lashing her for the "psychedelic" comments which kinda just proves how most of these reviews are like 80% narrative driven and the rest actual music critique now. Recently, Doja similarly set up Scarlet with her tweets bashing pop and her old music which were then heavily cited and referenced by the critics and they made her pay for not delivering an Illmatic level hip hop album. As for Dua, there just isn't the same buzz/anticipation this time like for FN, the pre album singles didn't take off and then the quotes from Dua herself, RO was easy bait and material for the critics to pan I fear.

tldr: if you're not paying for reviews, hush and let the music speak for itself.

I mean. It is a simple dance pop album lacking depth. What did anyone expect? I am not looking to enjoy this album for some deep artistic meaningful experience. I just want to feel good/have fun. A 6-7 average is pretty much expected for that type of album. That isn't even bad lmao. People act like it might as well be a 2/10 average

To be fair, poptimism wasn't a thing before the 2010's so you have to take many MC scores of earlier pop albums with a grain of salt.

Y'all saying "poptimism" here and there, when Bey, Ariana and even the newbie Tyla received good rates few weeks ago :skull:

I'm listening to it and so far i like, i think she oversold it a bit by trying to make it seem like something completely different from her last album.

Also i have to agree with the whole "faceless" thing, like she has no personality as a star, she seems to be just "good to look at" most of the time.
