Pitchfork praises Sabrina's "Espresso": "Everyone is rightfully obsessed with it"

Hailing it as a early favorite for 2024's song of the summer.

Quote

I know this came out almost three weeks ago, but it's going to be 82 degrees in New York today and it's fair to say that Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" is currently in pole position to be this year's song of the summer. The luxury nu-disco tune's got its hooks in me, and if you have a peripheral awareness of the phrases "That's that me espresso" or "I'm working late/'Cause I'm a singer," you'll realize it has also wormed into the brains of thousands of others. That's part of what makes "Espresso" such a deliriously good pop song: It's so unselfconsciously weird.

Quote

"Pop's disco revival is wearing a bit thin, but if you can do it with this much élan, this kind of cleverness, this singularly fizzy and bizarre vibe, maybe it can last just one more summer."

Listen, i did not expect Sabrina Carpenter to indulge in my kind of fantasies. I really did not expect her to. But i am here, i am seated. Yes.

this song should be number 1 as it is organic and not fueled by cult fanbase.

As much as I love Sabrina/the song, this tells a lot about Pitchfork :rip:

Can you define « organic » please? I would love to have your definition as the song is getting a lot of autoplay.

It's a masterfully written pop song tbh, no surprise it's a hit. Infectious melodies + lyrics that are fun to sing.

Espresso is a GEM that easily stands out amongst the dozens of generic nu-disco tracks. Such a breezy and infectious summer bop. :clap3:

That says a lot about them if they praise the song that much considering how it sounds like other songs from the past 4-5 years.

We can only hope that one day the music industry will be controlled by dedicated haters and the highest Billboard bribes rather than the fans. Truly the utopia
