@wastedpotential has turned into Taylor when she announces her albums: a person that does nothing!

ddddddd

Spoiler

I just got home from the club because I slipped and twisted my ankle and left halfway through my first ******* drink oh I hate it here this was tayvoodoo for leaving my computer while Tay was doing something :gaycat6:

Spoiler

Anyway, I'll give my lazy thoughts on the From The Gospel tracks though :gaycat4:

Spoiler

"Mary Magdalene!" - Oh this one took me several months to really get. I will admit that my first month and a half of praisings for this song were just in an effort to fit in with the girls around here who were giving it love. Now, however... oh it hits me hard. This song just makes me want lie face down in a pool and float around until I just kinda... go. I really love "adorned with smoke on my clothes" as a lyric, because it's such a random metaphor that really does work. I personally despise the smell of like a bonfire on clothes (and frankly Harry looks like he would smell really bad), so it just adds to the effect. However, that gentleman lyric... that could've been left in the 2014 ash heap. She had no problem changing lyrics for Apostles to Worship (Ten Apostles Version), but she left in some unabashed Hagrid praising? I worry about her sometimes.

Pray, Don't Go - Speaking of songs that took me a while to get into, I'm always itching to skip this during the first verse, but once that chorus kicks in, oh I'm SAT and RIVETED. My attention is CAPTURED. Miss Diane really gathered up all the potential she had to ever win an Oscar and channeled it into this song (which is why she's been cursed). That hook is... a ******* nuclear blast tier disruptive event. It literally wakes me up every single time I hear it. I know Max Martin had to go to the bathroom to clear his tears away and re-focus himself mentally after she played it for him in the studio, as he had act his ASS off in his effort to keep her from putting it on the album (for fear of everyone realizing there was a new boss in pop-camp town). The verses... needed to be like cut in half and given a bit more lyrical and melodic variation. Ultimately, this is a song with two radically different ratings for each of the radically different sections. It's disjointed, but if I could just hear a version with just chorus twice, then the bridge, then the chorus again, I'd be happy.

Now That We Attend Church - The last one hit like a bomb, this one hits like a bullet. It's punchy and to the point and quick, and it comes and goes in like three seconds. Lord was really in the Blank Space lyrical wit bag for a lot of these lines. However, I seriously, seriously doubt that Hagrid was ever parting a crowd, let alone like MOSES? One of Lord's like... two biblical references ever and it's wasted on that hideous man... I know she's deeply unserious. Anyway, the long hair tea and the ******* Richard Branson yacht lore... that's kinda history right there. I return to this one a lot, it gets me and the girls screaming along in the car.

Sinful Lutherans (almost went with Sinful Lesbians nnn) - I actually do not particularly care for this song but I still listen... like a lot. I think the chorus is lyrically weak (and she did a huge disservice to the titular lyric, it makes NO SENSE) and I despise the wonky way she tried to refer to a ******* slip n slide, let alone the ******* tortured high school metaphor, BUT there's something in a twinkly beat that will just grab me. It's simple and twinkly and all, but it's a bit magnetic and gets ******* stuck in my head. So, even though the lyrics are kinda serving album-worst level, the production and instrumentation and twinkliness... yeah she got me.

Is It Oblate Now? - Yeah, this is an Opus Of The Word Of God cousin, but on the opposite side of the family from Quran?. From start to finish this is just true pop excellence. From the ******* seagull noise and random little ticks, and then the... vague introductory lyrics, this is a bit of a slow burn. The first pre-chorus thing isn't even that great, though that waiter lyric had me on the floor when she put it on Instagram (and then rhyming it with traitor... she's got the mind of a mastermind). The chorus though... pop excellence. This shone through so well on the radio every time I heard it in the car (and I heard it frequently). She also really kinda karate chopped at Hagrid's throat with this one. The snowmobile accident, the duplicate Lord GFs, the blue eyed fetish, the model bed-hopping... he was eaten alive, and I don't think he's really recovered yet. She really fit "come here, I whisper in your ear, in your dream as you passed out" into a pop chorus and it worked. No one else has the ability to touch that, I'm sorry. ALSO, this bridge, this double bridge, there are so many ways in which I could praise it lavishly that I don't even know where to start. The yelping and the synth solo and then the add-on bridge where she came for his driving again, and "OH LORD" and her Bella Swan in New Moon-ification jumping off of things for attention. Yeah, this deserved a place on the album somewhere (maybe in IWYWsus's slot nnn), and it deserved to be a single, even back then. What a masterful pop song, indicative of the future excellence that the TayJack partnership (the new Lennon-McCartney, if you ask me) would bring.

HOW DO YOU girls boys and non-binaries listen to the record for the first time?

i usually want to listen to the album for the first time while reading the lyrics at the same time. it's a mind-blowing experience, and ever since folklore i've been doing it through the YouTube videos, but it's annoying because the videos are not in order. so i have to keep manually looking for them which interrupts the first-listen party. :clack:

Will listen to it having real time meltdown with Atrlers. :clack:

This is probably going to sound weird but my favorite place for a new Taylor album is laying in bed with no distractions, no visual aids, nothing but the music and vibes so I don't ruin the purity of the experience :clack:

Oh, BIG REPUTATION. What an underrated masterpiece you are.

Look. I got into pop music because of "Disturbia" and Evanescence and Lady Gaga hanging herself on television, The Fame MonsterRated R, and Natalia Kills. A Taylor Swift dark pop album was always something that was going to be so specifically taylored to my personal tastes that I could never not love it to death.

Ready For It, the ultimate hype song that always goes OFF live. All of her bits of End Game and that big reputation hook, oh wow. I Did Something Bad, actually excellent and perhaps her most dramatic and theatrical pop song. Delicate and Don't Blame Me, gods, what even needs to be said? The chills induced by the opening notes of Look What We Made A Legend Do; a whole pop culture EVENT. So It Goes… you are a flawless classic and every tongue that speaks against you shall fall. Gorgeous, whew, those adlibs in the last minute are some of the greatest of her entire career. Getaway Car: her best-written pop song, argue with the wall. King of My Heart, you're not the worst. Dancing With Our Hands Tied was too ahead of its time for certain people, given how many ripoffs subsequently smashed (some of my fave one liners here). Dress: I cannot, I cannot, I cannot. This Is Why Reputation Is Not A Flawless Album exists. Call It What You Want is so sweet and pretty and happy-sad and sad-happy. I don't love the studio version of New Year's Day, but the lyrics are so good and live performances are wonderful. Oh reputation, maybe you are her best pop album. :dancehall2:

Well since it's midnight, laying in bed in the dark. Screen off so there's nothing to distract me. But I usually jot down a few of my initial thoughts / reactions per song.

do you read the lyrics at the same time, or just focus on the music and then decipher the lyrics later on?

Just focus on the music. Honestly I don't really spend much time reading the lyrics. I just listen until I pick them all up. So there are plenty of Loser songs I have never and will never know all the words to.

The way rep came out a day or two before I went on a trip to Florida and I listened to it on the whole flight down and walking an hour down the beach and everywhere else I went. Always kinda takes me back to walking a beach in November. Such a weird vibe association for the album but it works.

Seeing ya'll rank TIWWCHNT is hilarious. The Rep tour on Netflix made me a bigger fan of the song and I get why she kept it on the album. I really want to hear the TV of it though.

Same here! Experiencing folklore for the first time was mindblowing on its own, but I also had the lyric videos pulled up which heightened the impact of every song - especially this one for TIMT. :jonnycat:
