Taylor Swift - 'THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT'

Okay, now that that's done... what a fascinating little song this is. I adore the music video. I remember being spellbound watching it serve hit in the UK despite cratering in the US and I remember being so mad that 22 killed the era here nnnn

Like this is very inoffensive and cutesy, and I like cutesy sometimes. This is a million times better than Runt, I will say (spoilers!!!), so I am glad it got the album slot. Still, this is like my third least favorite on the album and isn't worthy of much more commentary. My knuckles are bruised from whacking that man and it's a bit painful to type much of anything, especially about this 8/10 song on an 11/10 album.

Taylor lowkey made Ed Sheeran famous but let's not wake that tea up

:ryan3:

Edit: okay this is an obvious exaggeration but she did help him gain exposure in North America

The way that the second half of the Red era was so mismanaged. :rip:

No crossover push for "Red,” wasting six months on "Highway Don't Care" without trying to push her own country single concurrently, the diminishing returns of "22" and "Everything Has Changed”…

Oh and now we reach the other fanfiction on this album. Star of Bethlehem is... cute, but I resent every ******* thing about this song in the context of Lord's career. I lost one of my nine lives defending the fuckass house she bought on Cape Cod and all for an old Americana aesthetic family with zero pull and zero clout anymore. It's not the 1960s, the Kennedys have zero power or influence (:ryan3:). I will say the story about her crashing the wedding with that boy though... that was a fun day on the TayInternet.

As for the song itself... idk, I don't really care that much about a random rich old couple who died a few centuries ago and whose only big achievement was having successful kids? Like... if Lord wanted to write a song about that why didn't she profile Kris Jenner or something? It probably would've made for a more interesting song

:ryan3:

This is my only other skip on the album, but I only skip it like every other listen so it's not as bad. It's just aggravating.

Actually, lets... He'd be a khia nobody with that one A-team song and NOTHING else if it wasn't for her and the Red tour

Thinking about the 2013 Grammys Announcement Ceremony where Taylor Swift performed I Knew You Were Trouble "live" from Australia despite not getting a nomination for that song and Ed Sheeran announced the nominees for Pop Duo/Group Performance despite EHC failing to get nominated.

OH and then the BTS rehearsal scene where they exposed that one of the pop songs was going to be played if Red won Country Album.

They were wacking her left and right that year.

When the album first came out and everyone was SURE 22 was going to be this massive summer 2013 smash, and then it just... failed. I will say, in a success/public permeation ratio sense, 22 was probably THE floppiest single of the 2010s to be as well known as it is. Graduations, weddings, funerals, BIRTHDAYS...

Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, I clearly see a trend with her tour openers

At least 22 doesn't feel like it only peaked at #20. Time, the ultimate truth teller...

Red was robbed AF though, a push to pop radio and it'd fit in nicely (and wipe the floor) with the other ridiculously loud **** they were playing like Just Give Me A Reason :rip:

Spoiler

EHC shouldn't have existed in the first place but that's neither here nor there :ryan3:

Oh Born Again, what can I say? Up there as a fighter for the top 3 songs on the album, she really made a CLOSER with this one. I can't listen without getting my phone out and waving the flashlight in the air. The New Testament lower harmonies in the chorus, she ate that so bad. The little drum build going into the second verse... SHE ATE THAT SO BAD. This was my favorite of her music videos until well... 2015 (we'll get to that tomorrow nnn), I just love her serving housewife ***** on the banks of the Seine frolicking about as if Paris doesn't smell like rotting trash half the time, and piss for the other half. She set the expectations for my first visit to Paris WAY too high nnn

Anyway, I have no more to say about this song, except that I love it a lot and it was beautiful and I'm going to listen again right now (tmik be damned)!

I can't be bothered to say anything about the deluxe tracks in separate posts, so let me summarize them here:

The Messiah I Knew: Strings! And the same birthday story, as if we weren't already tired

Christ's Back, Be Holy!: This used to be underrated but then the New Testament came out and everyone realized how good it was (and how superior it was). LOVE!

*Glory at Hole: Ew. Zac Efron's new face just makes this even worse.

:ryan3:

*This nickname only applies to the Elvira version on the New Testament, the appropriate Old Testament nickname is Gospel at Home!

Taylor's recurrent power truly makes all the singles win in the end. I remember being so frustrated by 22's performance back in the day and look at it now.

The fact that You Need To Turn This Off is even about to pass one billion streams...Even when she loses she wins

Remember how on the 1989 tour, Shawn Mendes (opener) and Camila Cabello (guest) first met each other backstage and wrote a song together... and the rest is history

and also i think if you analyze his career movies it always kinda followed taylor steps. Until the "pop album full of radio hits" and his folklore. But all of this ruined in the long term his career instead of making him bigger like in taylor case :ryan3:

Officially one week before the album, the variants sale ends in 3 hours… are we moving for a little tease today?
