I'll be blunt about it: GAS is overrated. It's a very good song but not the absolute masterpiece people say it is. ivy and illicit affairs are easily superior >>>>>

Despite earning Swift a handful of middling reviews from critics, her April album The Tortured Poets Department still drew effusive praise from many outlets (this one included) – regardless of the stagnancy of its sound, the overheated metaphors of its lyrics, and the indulgence of its 31-track length. It's no real surprise that conversations around the record quickly became about Swift's capitalist supremacy than the work itself – this is an album with very little to say and a chronic inability to say the interesting stuff succinctly.

Swift has chugged along in the spotlight without breaks for years now, and it feels pointed that her finest material in the last decade was produced while she was literally unable to do anything other than make music – the gorgeous 2020 two-hander Folklore and Evermore were products of Covid-era quarantine.

Tortured Poets, meanwhile, was released amid peak Swiftageddon – the Eras tour, the Eras tour film, the endless re-records of her past albums – and sounds unsurprisingly exhausted. Swift picks over old tropes (witches again?), old feuds (Kim again?) and old melodies (Jack Antonoff again?). It's the sound of an artist so powerful and successful that no one dares challenge her or suggest she rest or regroup for a while.

Critics need to make up their minds if she should be done already with the Taylor's Versions or take a break.

Also, everybody saw the critic reviews, no publication is "afraid".

Lastly, how is folkmore brilliant but not the Anthology? Nostalgia is real.

Tree should manage these narratives against Taylor.

Every tragic mashup we got - and there's been many - was worth it for this

Posted

if I could dance with you again

id kiss you as the lights went out

swaying as the room BURNED DOWNN

id hold you as the water rushes in

and when that sky rains fire on you

And youre persona non grata

Id tell you how I've been there too

And that none of it matters

Honestly, the discourse around Taylor won't go back to normal in any way as long as she stays on top, she's been too big for too long for people to be indifferent/unbiased (positively or negatively). I wouldn't look too much into it, especially since it wouldn't be the first time history has favored her and she received retrospective acclaim.

Critics made some point regarding the album. Mainly that it is bloated, with some songs that really distract from the original message of the album, or that she overwrote for this album (even though for me this is a null point because that's part of the concept, but I understand why it would not be seen favorably by stoopid people :ryan3:). But overall, the critical reception to this album is much more a representation of the general current opinion on Taylor herself than on the album.

I really wonder if she still doesn't care about her overexposure or not. It was clear through 2023 that she didn't care at all. But since February she's been a lot more lowkey. Only releasing her album and continuing the tour, but without the 150 candids and apparitions like last year. It will be interesting to see if she'll go to the VMAs and/or NFL matches like last year.
