2011-2012 was worse tbf, the slurs galore, the cocky Little Monsters, Directioners casting death spells on Taylor cause of her dating Harry…

Always the worst on my books as a stan as well.

Look, I supported her on her flop eras, but not after recent events :biblio: There's only so many things I can look past.

Oh I'm with you. I made it through Smule and retroactively went to appreciate Witless after the olive branch but she's dug the hole so deep :deadbanana2:

she's taking Europe by storm, it's really like when Michael Jackson toured back in the 80s. The bigger surprise for journalist and what made them understand the phenomenon they don't know well directly is how Taylor music is the real big deal.

from italian reviews

rockol -"after months and months of Taylorsplaining (books, tv specials and any kinda of thing everywhere) when everyone tried to explain the phenomenon you understand everything just one minute after she walks the stage with her sparkling boots. The charisma is there and it's unmatched. You understand why The beatles comparisons have started in America. The audience knows every song. Every song is a hit cause every song is cult, like we didn't see since the Fab 4. You can have the fireworks and the big machine but what's unseen from decades with Taylor Swift it's the connection with the fans it's all about the music. The music is again the center in the relationship between the pop idol and the listener.

What she can do after this? Where you can go from something like this? You can not ask yourself this after seeing the biggest and most ambitious music star in the world. Taylor Swift is the last monocultural phenomenon the world has. "

corriere .."i have seen thousand of concerts and i never seen something like this before. The connection between this idol and her audience is incomparable. Not only they know the lyrics of every song but they sing like they know what's behind every word. A song is not just a song, it's an universe. At the concerts usually you see people singing some of the biggest hits, here the audience knows  every word and sings everything like it's an unique whole novel"

german review (bild)- "every song is the biggest hit ever for the fanbase of this artist. What can she do after this? Will she forced to stop to make concerts like The Beatles did cause they couldn't hear their voices anymore upon all the screaming. You see her as the next president or something like that.

A thread about this is probably coming in the next days btw.  :ryan3:

Why do I feel like "My Boy... is never much talked about as the hymn it is? The outro alone ascends it to top 5 on the album easily for me. The rest of the song is sung so strongly confident and steadfast, but you can hear the desperation and despair in her voice come out at the end.

I felt more when we played pretend
Than with all the Kens
'Cause he took me out of my box
Stole my tortured heart....
Left all these broken parts....

Told me I'm better off....
But I'm not,
I'm not, I'm not.

Let's talk about the bridges on this album

I loved your hostile takeovers

Encounters closer and closer

All your indecent exposures

How dare you say that it's -

I'll build you a fort on some planet

Where they can all understand it

How dare you think it's romantic

Leaving me safe and stranded

Cause what if I was in love

What if I can't have us.

Cause what if I was in love

What if I roll the stone away?

They're gonna crucify me anyway

What if the way you hold me

Is actually what's holy?

If long suffering propriety

Is what they want from me

They don't know how you've haunted me

So stunningly

I choose you and me

... Religiously

You **** talked me under the table

Talking rings and talking cradles

I wish I could un-recall

How we almost had it all

Dancing phantoms on the terrace

Are they second-hand embarrassed

That I can't get out of bed?

Cause something counterfeit's dead

It was legendary

It was momentary

It was unnecessary

Should've let it stay buried

Beauty is a beast that roars

Down on all fours

Demanding "more"

Only when your girlish glow

Flickers just so

Do they let you know

It's hell on earth to be heavenly

Them's the breaks

They don't come gently

And I sound like an infant

Feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen

A greater woman stays cool

But I howl like a wolf at the moon

And I look unstable

Gathered with a coven round a sorceress' table

A greater woman has faith

But even statues crumble if they're made to wait

I'm so afraid I sealed my fate

No sign of soulmates

I'm just a paperweight

In shades of greige

Spending my last coin so someone will tell me

It'll be ok

:clap3:

Another thing i remember from that period is that most Swifties were NOT willing to play dirty, we were the "model" fanbase to an extreme. And i do believe it's one of the reasons why OTHs have become so bold in discrediting and disrespecting Taylor the way they did over the years, they saw us as weak and thought they could get away with everything. We did not have a good street game at all back then :toofunny3:

You don't see Peter as being about Matty? The entire song is her positioning herself as Wendy and Matty as Peter. The loose ends left behind after their initial parting in 2014, broken promises, and their inability to find themselves in a timeline where they fit together. "I won't confess that I waited, but I let the lamp burn, as the men masqueraded, I hoped you return" -> literally biding time in each successive relationship while a flame still burned for her eternal muse. The song uses a point of reference from childhood, but that's only a device to illustrate her naivety for believing that one day things would work out between the two as well as provide a direct link to cardigan through the lyrical parallels. It's kind of the perfect song to serve as a prologue to lay the scene for the story that follows.

Sorry I didn't answer earlier, I was out for the weekend and forgot to answer when I got back.

Out of all the songs I had mentioned, I think Peter is the most debatable one on whether or not it fits on the album (I understand your point that it does belong, but from my point of view of the song, not really). While I do think the song talks about her relationship with Matty, I also think there's a deeper meaning behind it that goes way beyond just their relationship. Taylor has often talked about how much she had to change and grow after the Kanye incident/the "cancellation", and Matty was kind of the last man she's been really interested by before all that happened. To me, the whole metaphor of Peter Pan echoes back to her yearning for the innocence/youthful optimism she once had and was "taken from her" after all these events. By going back to Peter (/Matty), Taylor thinks she can get back that naivety from her earlier years that she's been missing so desperately. However, we've seen how that turned out. The line "But the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light" to me reads both as a goodbye to that relationship, that she understood would never work despite all these years dreaming about it, but also and more importantly to her innocence, that she understood she could never get back.

That's why I think I'm not sure Peter really fits on the album. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's how I feel anyway. Sure, the Matty relationship is part of it, but to me the song is so much more than that. It's about a woman who has to accept that she has grown, and that not even love could bring her the feeling of her youthful optimism back.

This general thread of her fear of growing up is one of the most interesting in her whole discography. She's been on it since forever with songs like Never Grow Up/Nothing New/Clara Bow/Peter, she talked a lot about it in the Miss Americana documentary, there's often a fear and/or resentment of being replaced by someone younger than her (both in the industry but also in her relationship, see All Too Well "I'll get older but your lovers stay my age")... I also think that's why she keeps on clinging to very youthful lyrics every now and then (what OTH would deem "immature") in songs like So High School or Miss Americana.

I really wish we get an album sometime where it's the whole topic. It would not only probably be one of the most relatable album she could ever come up with, but I think with the way songwriting helps her get through life, it could help her get to terms with it.
