thedeathbymusic Posted April 24 Posted April 24 You said some things that I can't unabsorb You turned me into an idea of sorts You needed me, but you needed drugs more And I couldn't watch it happen I changed into goddesses, villains, and fools Changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules All to outrun my desertion of you And you just watched it If you want to break my cold, cold heart Just say, "I loved you the way that you were" If you want to tear my world apart Just say you've always wondered 5
Tortured Poet Posted April 24 Posted April 24 And the years passed like scenes of a show The professor said to write what you know Looking backwards might be the only way to move forward Then the actors were hitting their marks And the slow dance was alight with the sparks And the tears fell in synchronicity with the score And at last she knew what the agony was for. 1

Great Username Posted April 24 Posted April 24 The melodies on the title track are just sooooo subtly addictive. You left your typewriter at my apartment Straight from the Tortured Poets Department I think some things I never say Like, "Who uses typewriters anyway?" But You're in self-sabotage mode, throwing spikes down on the road But I've seen this episode and still loved the show Who else decodes you? There's like 4 different hooks just within this first section??? The outcry at the Charlie Puth lyric also further proof that most people don't have two braincells to rub together. Like, quite literally the point of the sing is that it's funny that he sees himself as a tortured poet when in reality he's sat in a room smoking weed, eating chocolate and talking about Charlie Puth. And then there's another layer in that She also recognises these traits of pretension and self-indulgence in Herself ("who's gonna know you like me"), and acts as a kind of meta commentary on the fact that this is the title track of an ablum filled with the melodrama and gravitas of a tortured poet . And then another layer of storytelling that shows they're not just black and white characters who are either "tortured poets" or "two idiots": in each verse the humour and silliness of the typewriter being left at Her apartment or them getting high and talking about Charlie Puth is immediately contrasted with complex human emotion - "you're in self-sabotage mode, throwing spikes down on the road"; "you awaken with dread, pounding nails in your head, but I've read this one where you come undone, I chose this cyclone with you". As always, the Lord is smarter than those who make fun of Her. A tortured poet indeed 13 1
Mandalore Posted April 24 Posted April 24 Taylor is one of the most self-deprecating, self-aware songwriters and some people will never see it. The humor infused all through this "depressing" album is exquisite. Their loss! 9
19SLAYty9 Posted April 24 Posted April 24 2.5 minimum according to HDD. Need Scott to buy a million now. 1

Truly amazing how they let their preconceived notions and hatred stop them from experiencing true music and a masterpiece.

Popular Post Venice B Posted April 24 Popular Post Posted April 24 Okay but the more I listen to this album the more I realize how genius she is like the writing in this album is suberb. I can't even blame these critics because I think there's a lot to digest and flesh out, and you can only do that if you listen to the whole thing multiple times, but really the allegations about her "losing her touch" couldn't be more false. This album has everything, she explores sooooo many themes and it's really sad how the majority of people only relates these songs to her relationships when there's so much more to it, even in the songs that do explore past relationships. Of course everything is subjective, and I get some people not liking this album because there's not many "bops". This album actually feels like an album full of deep cuts, and I see that as a gift to the fans. Only the ones who sit with these songs and pay attention to them will fully understand them and appreciate them for what they really are. This one really is an album for the true fans, sometimes it even feels like she's having a conversation with the listener. I'm glad she made this one 31 songs long because I have a feeling she will never do something like this again. And I know it's been only five days and I hate when people rank albums in their release week because only time will tell BUT I think this might be my favorite album of hers. I'm obsessed. 14 1

As always, the Lord is smarter than those who make fun of Her. A tortured poet indeed there is a discussion about this music being the same of all this decade music she has made when even if her way of writing of course has its recognizable mark (i mean it's that and formed now, it's not like when she was changing from being 15 to being 25) it's this the album in which she changes more the way she builds melodies or her typical building structure of a song. Something wasn't there on Folkmore where basically she wrote pop songs, pop melodies anf bridges in her traditional way just on dessner more sophisticated (than in the past) tracks. Great Username Posted April 24 Posted April 24 He was CHAOS he was REVELRYYYYY Ugh inject the melody into my veins. The fact that She calls out the #speakupnow brigade as "judgmental creeps" rather than humouring the mental illness. One of the most genuinely shocking sings of Her career, not a perspective I was expecting from Her and I couldn't love it more. The sing is just suchhhh a riot 1
itsjem Posted April 24 Posted April 24 Italy's main TV news show just broadcasted a piece about her, TTPD and the links with Patti Smith and Stevie Nicks, saying how these legends are thanking her and recognizing her. Global legend tings 2
