Joe absolutely smokes weed, and he seems pretentious enough to use typewriters, too.

Remember, Taylor definitely had a type prior to Travis, and that was skinny pretentious artsy twinks dudes. And more often than not, British. :deadbanana2:

The songs are not attached uniquely to one or the other, she's dissecting them piece by piece and fitting them when convenient to realize what went wrong. The album truly is an autopsy :rip:

I think Taylor is blurring the lines on who's who.

Love your research tho.

I think this is also a fair assessment - some of the songs aren't so much about one as they are about both, and perhaps sometimes even some hypothetical boyfriend to project abstractions of real feelings she felt about either of them at some time.

I keep thinking it's called the dead poets society

the tortured poets department doesn't stick in my head for some reason :dies:

"Blurring the lines" is fair, but just a cope to me.

Every excuse related to Joe has to be imagined & assumed, while we have physical evidence for Matty :coffee2:

It's giving expecting something, spending months convincing yourself of it, & then refusing to accept the alternate reality :coffee2:

She's cohesive enough to do a full project on Matty. @xXavril will know. 6 years, their relationship had bored out, & she was out of inspiration, & he wasn't giving her any either. But the new fun guy she's cheating with just gave her a ton of new lyrics & made her feel good. She was out of love with Joe, & couldn't write anything about him anymore. That's so obvious with this album.

Blurring the lines is kinda smart cause it will spark even more discussions on who's who therefore more streams and the parasocial weirdos of her fanbase wouldn't know which guy to send death threats to and give up

Fr, The craziness in here just to say the album is about joe and Marty and her feelings during that time :rip: but yea that's about it, people trying to pin one song on one person aren't really seeing the big picture of the album

wait why not these? those scream joe to me, i feel like theyre more intimate and about an actual relationship, matty was more of a wild situationship

They kinda go as far back as 2015 before Matty was "controversial".

 But so is the whole album - and as a result, we thought the whole thing was about him. It's the key fake-out of the whole project and era, the central conceit of the story. From head to toe (no pun intended) this thing looks like an extremely typical Taylor Swift album, and it looks like it's going to be entirely about the six year relationship that didn't publicly end until after Midnights, which she has left narratively a little unresolved in her body of work. So you hit play, expecting the album implied as such, and instead you're greeted with an entire album about the extremely controversial month and a half long fling that immediately succeeded the longer relationship, composed largely in the style of that partner's band, with songs about how she's furious at him for leaving and furious at fans and gossip addicts for weighing in on it.

Giving my two cents, that's the only real thing that disappointed me. I didn't have high hopes for any genre change or concept, the only thing I believed I knew it, is that she was about to tear Joe apart or her for loving him. I wanted to cry with her, feel that anger for that 6 year relationship… and just didn't happen.

I really liked the album tho, pretty surprised with the takes she did and experiments as well, hope it pays up, it is an excellent record and deserves it.

Smokes cigs = Matty

Smokes weed = Matty

Smoke weed = Joe (& every one else)

Tattooed = Matty

Lucy = Matty

Typewriter = Matty (physical proof)

Typewriter = Joe assumed by Swifties who stanned him, then suddenly called him pretentious & a cheater for a year.

Omg she's blurring the lines y'all!!!

It's time to hit the 5th stage

I don't think there was anger because it was slowly released throughout 6 years. And she got her mind out on 3AM, Evermore, & Folklore.

I can relate. U should hate someone for what they did to u, but because it was slowly dragged on for 6 years, paper cut by paper cut, it just don't hit anymore. Especially when u already moved on with someone else.

The fact that we got like 3 Joe songs, 1 Travis song, and 900 Matty songs is so insane :deadbanana4:

I think most of the album is about Ratty, but that if there are really more songs coming at 2am, they'll be the "post-mortem" of Toe. The lyrics that were teased at the Spotify pop-up really sound like they fit the Toe narrative, yet they're not on any of the songs we've heard.

She had a rebound fling instead of facing Her feelings, and had to unpack them when the rebound ended. It works narratively.

To me it even works with the track sequencing. Haha look at me I moved on so fast, I'm gonna have his baby —> I Can Fix Him —> oh **** I can't fix him —> oh now I have to face my real feelings  (I Can Do It With a Broken Heart) after the rebound crashed and burned. Her mind!

No no u right :jonny5: the Post Mortem being about Joe would make SO MUCH sense. Ratty was the "high" she had, before she could truly reflect on what happened.

Aside from the technical details about the who and what and when and where of it all, I have to say, something feels genuinely different about being a fan for this release. I don't think I've ever thought about her work in the same way as I've thought about it for the past day, and I'm so excited for the HQ streaming release so I can start to pull every layer of this album apart. It's pulled me in like I don't think any other album ever has. I'm not going to jump the gun and call it my favorite, or my second favorite, or third, or whatever - I'm going to give it the space to settle. But it's definitely in some league of its own.

Eh, a few did, just like a few are stanning Travis now:deadbanana4:

There was some sort of audience for all of Taylor's awkward promo instagram stories of movies and TV shows Joe was the worst part of

Fortnight is clearly about Matty, BUT she does allude to Joe in it.

"My husband is cheating on me"

and in the other half Joe song Slammer

"bitter he was with her in dreams"
