I think that trying to prioritize this idea of "poetry" or "good lyricism" has resulted in the sacrifice of the songs actually... sounding good? i very much get love + fear by marina vibes... HOWEVER. this is not the case for the whole album! Standouts are Florida, Guilty as Sin?, Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?, Clara Bow, and The Black Dog. Some highlights, but ultimately even weaker than Midnights or Lover. The album starts off weak, gets better from track 7 onwards. Shocking lack of single material. I mean, I'm sure the GP will latch onto something (she's Taylor Swift after all), but there are no Anti-Heros or Cruel Summers here. I Can Do It With a Broken Heart... I get (and appreciate) was she was going for, but Jack was NOT the producer for this. There's a solid 40-minute album somewhere in here. I get that Taylor Swift™© is built on delivering as much music as possible (and I recognize her hard work), but curation has been needed on her studio albums for some time now. Highlights: title track, Fresh Out the Slammer, Florida!!!, Who's Afraid, Loml and Clara Bow Score: 6.0 Spoiler She's never doing another Folkmore, is she? I really like the opening track. But she needs a new partner producer to go with different sound and refresh her style a bit. Lots of songs have the same tone as some Lorde songs.
