ATRL Moderator Popular Post Juánny Posted April 10 ATRL Moderator Popular Post Posted April 10 I do believe some of what she's saying is being a tad misrepresented or misunderstood here. From watching what she says in the full clip it is clear she is a huge fan of Madonna, she went to the Celebration Tour and said she cried during the Live To Tell performance. In the full interview she does speak a lot to how impactful it was for Madonna to have supported the LGBTQ+ community in the 80s and 90s when nobody else would, advocating for issues facing gay men particularly during the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and that she helped so many people in real ways during that span of time. None of what she's said should lead us to think she's dismissing Madonna's contributions to our community. I believe what she means to say is that queer people can be their own spokespeople in today's day and age, we have a bigger voice, bigger platforms, and more power in our self-determination and partially due to the advocacy of people like Madonna. In essence, we don't need straight people to speak for us necessarily in today's day and age. But as others have said we do in a very existential way need their allyship, which I think is important to draw the distinction with. In the moment I believe it was erroneous of her to assume Madonna is straight. I'll admit I thought Madonna was straight too for some reason, it can be an easy mistake to make on the fly to assume she is because it can be hard to even find confirmation of it online. Madonna still fits into a heteronormative framework relatively cleanly in ways other LGBTQ+ folks can't or will never be able to: she married the opposite sex (twice), publicly dated almost exclusively men, had children, is a mother, is cis female, etc. But all that aside, the assumption of her straightness doesn't necessarily take away from her main thesis that I think we can start to think about at least. I do believe the ship has sailed on us needed straight people to talk for us, and us to start speaking up for ourselves on higher platforms. 24 4

Riverbank Posted April 10 Posted April 10 I see no lies And if the pressed homos in here actually watched the clip, they'd see that she wasn't shading her at all. She literally went on to praise her in the next sentence 1
State of Grace. Posted April 10 Posted April 10 (edited) I watched the interview and she wasn't coming for Madonna and her advocacy at all. I do think that she has a point, but straight allies are unfortunately still needed imo, let alone in the 80s/90s. Things are way different and better now so when you position yourself as an ally, you shouldn't take over the conversation and become the face of the movement instead of the people you were fighting for. You have to expect that people will come for your allyship too. Madonna never claimed to be a representative/spokesperson for the queer community afaik. That said, I don't like the way some of her fans (and even non-fans since its a common sentiment in our community) always credit her and other allies for our rights instead of the queer people of color who died fighting oppression, bigotry, etc. Edited April 10 by State of Grace. 6

We are the ones that fought back oppression for our ******* rights and had to resist straight opression for generations. It's our ******* blood, especially after the AIDS crisis. WE made the motherfucking noise. Regardless of Madonna. The fact y'all want us to THANK a straight person before recognizing our own is what is incredibly uneducated And is uneducated not to thank a person who supported in a time no one wanted to suport. Its spitting in a plate you eated.... She always said how grateful she was to the gay comunity how suported her when she arrived to NY and in all her career, and why the gay comunity doesnt want to suport her now? 1
Ewan Chaos Posted April 10 Posted April 10 The amount of people on the first page lacking critical thinking and jumping straight to a conclusion after reading the title, not even attempting to look for additional context Stan culture is a DISEASE! 6
.Odyssey. Posted April 10 Posted April 10 After the speech that she made last night in Miami about Pulse and standing with gay people that literally had me BAWLING…. ….shut the **** up, ungrateful woman 2 2

thequeenofpopmadonna Posted April 10 Posted April 10 I think she needs to shut up. As if she saw her in the 80s when everyone was avoiding talks about gays. Grow up 1 1

JoeAg Posted April 10 Posted April 10 Madonna is most certainly bi, but St. Vincent spilled. she also is NOT coming for Madonna here, I think this is poor timing and very much taken out of context anyway. 3 talented, sexy queer legends are present here. Annie, Jake, and Madonna 1
