Is Dua playing the long game like Beyoncé?

Recommended Posts

I read a comment not long ago about how back in the 2010s everybody was focused on trying to have their EDM moment with albums and singles, while Beyoncé, despite having a Diplo-produced lead single, gave her album 4 a more R&B and funk approach.

From there, Beyoncé's artistic choices seemed to maintain a more cohesive evolution of her sound, while occasionally dabbling in current trends through collaborations or promo singles.

I think this is the game Dua has in mind. Even tho, on the surface, it might look like she is not performing as well as before, I feel like she's trying to build a solid fanbase that will continue to support her for years to come.

She is focusing on quality rather than instant quick hits just like Beyoncé did with her album 4.

Her current sound is a subtle evolution from her previous music without feeling too extreme or alienating to the core fanbase she already has in her pocket.

Maybe she will keep re-peaking in 10, 15 and 20 years to come?

Dua does has an understanding of (pop) music that I don't think any of her peers have, and we know she will happily take her time to craft an album she 100 % stands behind (although I don't think that already warrants Beyoncé comparisons). I definitely see her as an artist rather than just a singer. Is she playing the long game? We'll see, but I'd say she's on a good way.

Thank you, yes, i'm not comparing Beyoncé and Dua's careers as a whole but I definetely think Dua have her eye in longevity rather than quick top 10 H100 hits.

Dua Lipa definitely seems to be mimicking a more Beyoncé-like career shift right now, transitioning from radio friendly pop girl into a more sophisticated, acclaimed respected artist and performer. Radical Optimism will probably be her 4, underperforming singles left and right but she will solidify a touring fanbase and won't really flop even if it seems like a career lull

Yes. If she keeps following her own path and loses the U.S. because she won't make a foreign music genre she was not raised with then she still has every other market to work around the globe (several of which are very profitable).

Semi-flopping is now "playing the long game"? Can artists not do that while they score #1s? The songs simply didn't catch on lmao The coping has gone haywire

I was gonna say no, but this could very well be true BECAUSE when we would try to tell people that Beyonce was heading into a Madonna like career trajectory around 2011 people laughed and laughed. I feel like day one fans have a very intune connection with their faves and can notice those changes whereas non stans cannot. We knew something changed with Beyonce around the 4 era and then we got Self-Titled and never looked back.

This comparison sounds ridiculous based on the thread title but when I read the post, it really doesn't seem far-fetched.

The only issue is I haven't heard Radical Optimism yet, so we'll see how true this is when the album comes out. So far, I sort of see the parallels.

ATRL pushes her as some Björk-like artiste. she's a basic dance pop girl and that's great.

Beyoncé already has a solidified fanbase by the time she released 4. She already has destiny child, DIL, B'day and IASF commercial eras, about 14 yrs of commercial eras ( solo plus group) coupled with the fact that she was already known as a badass performer by then. At best , she would have been a legacy act/icon like Usher et al and has a touring/ performance to rely on.

I love Dua and really rooting for her. It's good for artists to evolve , but it's always risky to take big risks when you don't have a solid fanbase yet. I hope all these works out well.

The way yall lick Dua's ass is insane, and I don't even have anything against her.

She's a good pop star, but she's essentially a less buzzworthy Rihanna. Writing camp'd albums, mostly an artists just there to deliver hits and be gorgeous. That's a good lane to be in. But if Rihanna had singles performing like Houd/TS, she would have been dragged through the mud.
