descg Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Maybe true (also whites or every etnic apart of latino) but is not the only reason, Selena is that type of singer that it's becoming more and more famous over the years, (like Tupac, Aaliyah or alive ones), also INTERNET, the "nostalgia effect", etc...
Marry The Gods Posted April 5 Posted April 5 This applies to everyone including white and asian people. The biopic did its job in introducing Selena to the non-spanish speaking audiences 2
Inverted Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Well, she was a Spanish-language artist. Why would most non-Hispanic black people know of her? Also, even most Hispanics didn't know of Selena. She was Mexican regional singer popular with Mexicans and Mexican-Americans originally and then began expanding. 2 hours ago, popmusicisdead said: there are least 2 things that are FALSE in that thread title. You're not even black. And let's not pretend Selena was known in the Philippines or the rest of Asia before the movie. 2
Bussea Posted April 5 Posted April 5 She's not the reason, but she is the reason FOR SOME people. When I was younger, I didn't know who Selena was until I saw the movie. 1

Attitude Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Selena's death was what brought her to a mainstream audience. Dreaming of You sold 4 million copies by the end of 1996, before the release of the film. The film helped solidify her as an American icon and Jlo did a great job. This twink needs to stop because he's just adding onto the Jlo hate train with his delusions. 5

Raiden Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Well kudos to her Better a Selena-mule than a semi-automatic mule

kataraqueen Posted April 6 Posted April 6 That's an odd way of putting it. Did Leonardo DiCaprio put the Titanic on the map? 1
Marianah Adkins Posted April 6 Posted April 6 I'm far from a Jlo fan (borderline OJH if anything) but he's right. Outside the US and the Latin world, Selena is known because of the JLo movie. Though I must say that it kinda worked both ways as well. Jlo also became known bec of the Selena movie and is the reason why she had a music career in the first place aka the reason why she was such a huge celeb.
mig123 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 (edited) Selena didn't need JLO to be famous…. She was famous for her death, PERIOD! The movie came out years after and They could have easily picked another actress ,And it would have still be ICONIC ! Edited April 6 by mig123 1

Kind of in the same vain as Demi. People respect their talents and contributions to music but they never had a dedicated fanbase like Beyoncé and Miley. I would say that she was tolerated at best. And at worst, used by Latinos to try to one up Beyoncé (for example her being a better actress) but J Lo doesn't have the musical stats to compare so they gave up. I'm sure if Selena was alive though, there would have been a fan made competition between them with a lot of anti-Black rhetoric. 1
Junlin Posted April 7 Posted April 7 He kinda looks like beyonce and Jay-z at the same time if that what making it hot. I knew Selena only because of JLo too 1 1
Soda Pop Queen Posted April 7 Posted April 7 (edited) Baby, I'm from Texas lol most Texans, regardless of race, already knew of her down here because she is a Tejas native. Now, did everyone listen to her is another story but we had heard of Selena before Jenny played her on the big screen in 1997, especially if you lived in Southeast TX. For non-Texans and non-Mexicans, I'm sure they probably did first learn of her either because of the movie or because of the news of her tragic death in 1995. Tejano music is a regional genre after all. On the other hand, one could also say that the Selena film is the first time many people knew of Jennifer Lopez. Her star rose considerably afterwards.
