Lara Croft wins vote for most popular video game character ever

At first I was like, surely Mario?

But I think Mario is a character that is basically the chess piece to his game but isn't actually a well defined "character" as such. Whereas Lara is.

So well done Lara :clap3:

Hard disagree but there're 2 factors I think influenced this heavily. 1, she's the title character. Legend of Zelda has had so many smash successes but GP still thinks Link's name is Zelda. Master Chief in Halo has the same thing going on. Branding wise, she has that advantage. 2nd, she's the most interesting part of her games. Mario is the "straight man" in a rly colourful in-game world. If you're a fan of the Mario games, odds are your fav character isn't Mario, it's gonna be Luigi, Toadette, King Boo, Bowser, etc. 1 of the characters with more personality. No shade, it's easy for LC to standout in her games, there's not much else going on?

I feel like they're most iconic protagonists, but "character"? Idk. I hear you though.

Fair take. Mario has his games named after him, but are we playing Mario if given the option to play anyone else? Unlikely.

Mario is the brand of the game that everyone loves. But likely isn't the favourite.

Same way Pikachu is the brand for Pokémon 9/10 but arguably isn't most people's favourite Pokémon.

She's literally the most iconic and defining video game character of the '90s. Of course! :clap3:

She's not even top 5 probably not even top 10 if we're being honest.

But the title is "most iconic character" not "most favorite". Mario is easily the most iconic, anyone recognizes him. If people play as him when given the choice is another story...

I agree that Lara is a more interesting character but that's not really what the award is about.
