JoeAg Posted March 29 Posted March 29 The Grateful Dead imo Friend of the Devil is a cute folk song, but I genuinely don't think I'll ever understand why they have such a cult following I remember my former roommate telling me that they have a lot of great psychedelic music to get stoned and trip to but she showed me a few of her examples and girl… I'll stick with my MGMT and my Kate Bush thank you very much! I will say that a lot of deadheads are hot hippieish dorks with beards who can get it but otherwise I don't think the band itself has contributed much that warrants continuous acclaim
Davidoff Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Mary J Blige - her tone is the worst in the industry and we supposed to pretend that she's some kind of a vocal genius with that nails on a chalk board voice? Not today. Taylor Swift - constantly giving mediocrity and praised to gods for it by the GP that clearly dont know any better. 1

I'm not saying she's untalented because she's not, but she is not so too special to call her the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. She was the first one to sing soul over traditional hip-hops which basically invented modern R&B as we know it. Almost everything in modern pop, rnb and hip-hop (especially the melodic hip-hop that 808s/Drake mainstreamed) can be traced back to MJB.

La Reina Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I was actually surprised to find out that lots of people think that Mary J. Blige can't sing. Her vocal talent is often put into question in R&B spaces, even by other singers such as Chaka Khan. Of course, I don't agree with this. I just think she has a flat/nasally tone which makes people think this. Also, Mary may be local to the U.S. but she has a long career there with some classic R&B hits.
suburbannature Posted March 30 Posted March 30 MJ (I get it musically, but he was a pdf) Taylor (to the degree she is, anyway) H.E.R. (in terms of awards) Lorde (she was a safe, relatively gender-neutral pick for misogynistic critics in the Lana massive hate era) 2

Her voice has declined a lot in live performances tbh the past 10 years.
BlueTimberwolf Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Taylor is the obvious answer. I feel like the industry keeps handing her so many awards based on her success, and a desire to uplift her (whether it's b/c they see themselves in her, their kids like her, as a counter to Beyonce, who knows). And then, her fans on the back end fill-in-the-blank a level of substance that isn't there. So much of her music is lightweight, repetitive, and has very little to say. Her accolades are a mystery to me. 2
Happylittlepunk Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Her imo. At least people like Taylor can back it up with critical acclaim with other publications and has a strong fanbase not just Grammys. HER on the other hand is unknown everywhere and hipsters and pitchfork aren't running fast to defend her or have a following like that on the streets.

Y'all stay lying on here Her 1st album is nearly 3X Platinum eligible in the US, you don't sell nearly 3M units of a album being "unknown everywhere" The exaggerations are unnecessary

She's talented but the way people talk about her on here is like she's a household name. also, she's only released one LP - Back of My Mind - which is only currently certified gold. Her compilation album H.E.R is certified platinum but it's a combination of earlier EP's which - if I'm remembering correctly - would apply the streams from those earlier songs to the album? Could be incorrect about that last bit though.

You have to pay to update certifications Her self titled compilation was certified Platinum 4 years Back Of My Mind was certified Gold like month after release 3 years ago All outdated certifications Even this is old now Back Of My Mind should be around 1.3M and "H.E.R." should be at least 2.6M/2.7M now.

I think Michael was respected for his talent. Everybody knew he was troubled.
Polgg48 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 mumford and sons - nothing special zac brown (formally known as band) - busker level jorja smith - annoying vocal nas - only good for one album beck - token because he exists for a while and that's it and maybe... nile rodgers - everything he produced is one-two kids bop chords and 95% flop or unlistenable
