Mandalay Posted March 18 Posted March 18 I'm kinda surprised Wonka wasn't a flop. He is talented for sure, but we also can't deny that those movies are big productions. I mean I consider Julia Roberts a box office draw cos he was selling tickets based on her name alone.
DanyelP23 Posted March 18 Posted March 18 (edited) Only the str8 twink male version Sandra Bullkock! Not surprised at all. Edited March 18 by DanyelP23

He’s smart enough to book versatile projects and roles, and audiences clearly like him better than the likes of the early 2010s would be leading men (Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer, Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Hunnam and Jai Courtney) 2
harwee Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Timothee's films aren't riding on the success of prior IPs. In fact its the opposite. Depp's film wasn't particularly beloved and the original Dune film has an absolute stinker legacy. So credit to Timothee for being in both successful relaunch of adaptations of dormant IPs which I think its really cool. 4
nadiamendell Posted March 18 Posted March 18 He's largely hated on ATRL, so of course he is a massive success. 3
Flanders Posted March 18 Posted March 18 I think his star power was definitely one of the reasons for the Wonka success, less so with Dune. Impressive feat in any case! 1 1

He needs to do it with an original script to be considered a box office draw. The entire MCU can't even bring in money with original movies but Tim is a box office draw now? Ok... lowkey true but the original dune was a flop, this new one also hasn't had greenlit the two following films from the trilogy.. it's an ensemble cast but he's definitely contributed to it. same with wonka, so many ppl went to see it just because timothy played wonka.
illia Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Dune would have smashed with or without him I think but Wonka yeah, he did his thing there (still hate the movie and I think he fits more serious roles like Paul in Dune)
lauren198 Posted March 18 Posted March 18 I watched Wonka on max this weekend and he was surprising (to me) charismatic
Parallel Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Why are people saying Dune is successful because the IP? The OG film is one of the most notorious flops of all time

They have their merits of course, but never underestimate the weight of studied audience preferences. They push because they know this particular type will work and Depp had aged out for the industry.

The OG film is one of the most notorious flops of all time Actually, it went on to become a successful cult film. The popularity of the franchise is significantly bigger than where it was 40 years ago. OT: The only six new actors I can even name are Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Jenna Ortega and Tom Holland. It's not really a surprise to see any of them as the fresh blood in franchise films.
geodude Posted March 19 Posted March 19 do y'all really think Wonka and Dune would be as successful w/o him?? I'm trying to think of what younger male actors right now has as much box office pull without having MARVEL attached to it
