Brooklyn Baby Posted March 18 Posted March 18 (edited) Timothée Chalamet Makes History with the Two Top-Grossing Movies of the Last Eight Months We haven't seen that happen since the early days of John Travolta. “Dune” joined WB’s “Wonka” as the second film to pass the domestic $200 million total since last July. By next weekend, it will surpass that film’s $218 million gross. Timothée Chalamet has achieved something that no actor has done in a long time. With “Wonka” and “Dune 2,” he has the lead the the top two domestic grossing films over the last eight months. That is, to put it mildly, rare. Checking back, we can’t find anyone who can claim that (as a lead in a live-action film, as opposed to ensemble Marvel casts) to accomplish that since John Travolta did it for “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease” in the late 1970s. Even with caveats (for “Dune” in particular he’s part of a larger cast, against limited competition), that’s an impressive achievement. Movie stars who deliver box office are in short supply https://variety.com/2024/film/box-office/dune-2-box-office-milestone-400-million-1235944137/ ‘Dune: Part Two’ Nears $500 Million at Global Box Office, Surpasses Entire Run of First Film “Dune: Part Two” is barreling toward another box office milestone. Director Denis Villeneuve’s science-fiction sequel has grossed $494.7 million globally, including $208 million in North America and $289.4 million internationally. It should surpass the $500 million mark by Monday, a figure that few films have reached in post-pandemic times. Although it’s early in the year, “Dune 2” is currently the highest-grossing film of 2024 at the domestic and worldwide box office. After 10 days on the big screen, “Part Two” surpassed the entire domestic tally of the first film ($108 million), although it’s worth noting that the benchmark comes with a major caveat. The original 2021 film was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, so its ticket sales were stifled by the hybrid release on streaming. Now, the follow-up film has outgrossed its predecessor, which generated $433 million at the worldwide box office. Edited March 18 by Taeyong
DevilsRollTheDice Posted March 18 Posted March 18 You know, I was always low-key a Timmy hater because I thought he kept serving the same performance. Happy to say he proved me wrong, very cool achievement 1
liquiddiamonds Posted March 18 Posted March 18 no, because the industry pushed him hard to be a new Johnny Depp with acclaimed movies and franchises 1
Kimbra Posted March 18 Posted March 18 He's piggybacking off existing IP's like Wonka and DUNE( the inspo for Star Wars) . He needs to do it with an original script to be considered a box office draw. The entire MCU can't even bring in money with original movies but Tim is a box office draw now? Ok... 6 5
Feanor Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Imagine if now his Bob Dylan biopic can be finished in time for this year's awards season and he gets another Best Actor nomination to cap off this run… 1
burninredhot Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Good for him. Still feel he is massively overrated tho 7
Popular Post Space Cowboy Posted March 18 Popular Post Posted March 18 Both films are IP driven, their success did not depend on Chalamet. 13 2

AxelFox Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Good for him, but I also think this has more to do with the big franchises he's playing in rather than his star power as an actor. At least at this moment in time. Everyone in my group of friends said they didn't like him in Dune after we went to see it last week and that he didn't fit the character. A girl said she liked him in Wonka and he was better there, but I have not seen that one so idk. 1

Genuinely not trying to discredit his accomplishments, but neither of these films seriously depended on his name to bring in audiences members. The Bob Dylan film and his projects after could be a different story though given the foundation he's built with these IP films. 1
Rhyme Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Anyone saying Timothy is not the draw for Wonka is delusional and underestimating just how much girls and women like him. But sure, dream of Harry Styles in a Wonka movie and think that would smash because it's Wonka 2 4
James_Dean Posted March 18 Posted March 18 It's the way people keep moving the goal post when it comes to his achievements y'all are some bitter queens 2 2

Ok... if Dune was a guaranteed success, Warner would’ve greenlit both parts but they didn’t. Try again

dirrtydiana Posted March 18 Posted March 18 No he’s everything that ex one direction guy wants to be 1
JoJo Posted March 18 Posted March 18 People were swearing that Wonka would flop, but now that it’s a box office smash, the new narrative is that the film would’ve been a success with or without Timothee? Sure, okay 1
