But I think in general the importance of songwriting ability for pop singers is way overrated imo. I think it is the least important talent considering it is the easiest to delegate to somebody else. You can’t really delegate vocals. I suppose you can delegate stage presence and the ability to play instruments to an extent by having loads of backup dancers and stage props and bands. But songwriting if needed can pretty much be completely delegated to a faceless person behind the scene and most people would never know.

I’m gonna let it slide cos I think she’s sweet and she’s been thru a lot but. This is certainly strange considering her brand.

She’s completely and utterly clueless when it comes to Pop sensibilities, however. Which is why I don’t care for her opinions.

The idea that Beyoncé is overrated because she doesn't do a thing that isn't even prerequisite to being a popstar is highly ignorant, and presumes that Beyoncé is rated where she is because the entire world loves and adores her songwriting when that is not the case.

 

You wouldn't say an actor is overrated because they don't write their own screenplays. You'd say they're overrated if their acting talent is not as good as people say. You may also think an actor that does write their own screenplays is brilliant, but that doesn't mean anyone who does not should be rated below them, unless we are merely counting resume bullet points.

 

If we are to ascertain who is or isn't overrated, we need to look at what they are actually rated FOR. Then, if the talents they are rated for don't match their rating, of course they would be overrated. Beyoncé is rated the way she is for being a one-of-a-kind artist for her generation. Combining singing, dancing, and creative vision, she's the complete pop package in a way we don't see much anymore. That's why she gets the title of Queen Bey. That's why she has such reverence. It's not dependant on who wrote the songs, but that she always comes correct and thus is a symbol of excellence for society, thus her rating as a Top Tier pop-artist, and I don't think anyone can (even with hefty delusion) pretend this is not the case.

 

Furthermore, it's been pointed out time and time again that Beyoncé does write on her songs. Though she has taken a far more collaborative approach since her Destiny's Child days, this is not to the detriment of her skillset. I've posted countless quotes from people who have actually worked with her who detail exactly what she has contributed to her biggest/most acclaimed songs like for example Crazy in Love's bridge, or Formation's verses. And still, people wish to undermine her talents. So...overrated? As a songwriter? When he enter career has been full of haters trying to demean her skills? When she is one of the few pop girls to have solo-written* an 11-week #1 hit? I'd say she's underrated in that regard, as she doesn't often get her fair assessment.

 

*I say solo-written as a near-joke, because Independent Women has some co-writers. But hater-logic is that if Beyoncé comes in and adds lyrics or melodic changes to any song, she's not a real, fair songwriter and that someone else wrote it. But hater-logic never allows that thinking to apply to Beyoncé when she's solo-written a song and had others contribute some changes.

Bey has always been a threat to people. Bey is highly respected because she is actually talented and is a great performer. Beyonce music is amazing as well but what we all love about Bey is that she has the looks, Voice and can dance and do it well at the same time. People only call Bey overrated because she doesn't always cater to European Audiences. Beyonce I am Sasha Fierce era was the the only album that she did that was POP POP. Beyonce is an urban  artist that is also a crossover musician. Writing your own music doesn't hold the same weight when you can't sing for ****. Mariah Carey is a writer and Vocalist.
