One hit wonders with great discographies?

Rickie F*cking Lee Jones

yes, queen was a one hit wonder with this pop rock classic

and the rest of her first album was great too, BUT!

her second album somehow ended up being a masterpiece and one of the greatest pop albums of all time. and it features this song, which is so flawless that it deserves to be heard and cherished by all pop music lovers

the rest of her discography is amazing too, even when she’s just doing jazz covers. talent always wins!

Evelyn Champagne King had only one Top 10 hit on the BB Hot 100 (her debut single "Shame"), but her music was a staple of the New York club scene in the late 70s and early 80s. She has SEVERAL disco and post-disco bangers. The full 12" version of I'm In Love is especially stunning.

Love Come Down went triple DIAMOND in this house. Let me get more into her music :jonny:

Hang on, which song was the hit? If you mean 2 On I’m not sure that counts with it peaking at #24.

Peaks aren't everything. Remember, "Don't Speak" never charted on the Hot 100, while "Trollz" peaked at #1. Which one is considered the bigger hit by the GP today?

I don't know if they necessarily count but I'd throw in Aly & AJ. They had a couple songs chart in the bottom half of the hot 100 but PBUS was their first and only top 20 hit yet they've continued making amazing music :jamming:

What about Love in a Vacuum, Coming up Close?

And then as a solo artist, she has Save Me, Wise Up, and That's Just What You Are.   Time Stands Still (with Rush) was also sort of a hit.

Idk if they are all "hits", but in the context of her being an indie artist, they were very popular outside of indie circles.

Doesn't she have 3 or more hits in the UK?  Von Dutch went Top 30 in the UK.  And Speed Drive was sort of a hit in the US last summer

My definition of hit for these purposes, certainly for pre-streaming, is "did anyone buy this song?", so the only *hit* hit she has is Voice's Carry imo (edit: i checked the archives again there's another Til Tuesday single, What About Love, that made US #26, otherwise she never cracked the top 40). But ofc, everyone knows and loves Save Me, Wise Up and the rest.

If we're talking US...

Aqua - apparently Lollipop & Turn Back Time were top 50 tho, didn't realize :rip:

Everything But the Girl

Dexys [Midnight Runners] - their last album sucked but Too Rye Aye and One Day I'm Going to Soar, so good!

Eiffel 65

The Weather Girls though I was counting Martha/Blackbox so maybe they don't fit.

Evelyn Champagne King already being mentioned :smitten: Get Loose one of the best albums EVER.

Posted

Natalia Kills

She was never huge maybe and her only "hit"  "Mirrors" was local to Europe I guess. And even though she killed her career before it even started, "Perfectionist" and "Trouble" are such good pop albums :jonny:

Posted

Katy Perry.
