MadMax12 Posted March 2 Posted March 2 It was obvious that Gaga had a lot of plans for ARTPOP and was excited about it. When Katy swooped in with Roar at the same time and outshone the much hyped Applause, it hit her ego hard and resulted in her cancelling a lot of the era’s plans to avoid more backlash. Would the era, and her career in general be in a different place now if the lead single wasn’t pitted against the other big superstar at the time or if she picked a better lead? I don’t think Applause was the best choice for the lead single, it should have been DWUW, Venus or Gypsy 1 1 10
Fleahive Posted March 2 Posted March 2 No, anyone that isn’t apart of online standom had no idea they were competing. Normal people just press play and bop. 6
GraceRandolph Posted March 2 Posted March 2 No she was doomed to fail. There was a rising conservative backlash were still feeling and Gaga didn’t appeal to the black community like Bey or girls under 12 like Katy or Taylor to survive it. 2
Josh Posted March 2 Posted March 2 People were already over Gaga by the time Born This Way came out, Roar vs Applause just put the final nail in the coffin 1

Jay07 Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I don't think it was Roar v Applause, the cracks were already starting to show at the end of the Born this Way era and ARTPOP was a miscalculation. Also, there were a lot of issues behind the scenes. 5
Human Fly Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Applause is literally her best lead single and you out there saying “lead should’ve been something else” 2

SharGaga Posted March 2 Posted March 2 The answer is no. Would Katy's career be different if Kesha didn't sue Dr. Luke and if she didn't burn bridges with Bonnie McKee? The answer is yes. 1

ViviLittleM Posted March 2 Posted March 2 (edited) the past is in the past it's 2024 Gaga is an Academy Award winner, actress and one of the biggest selling artists ever Edited March 2 by ViviLittleM

DWUW had better production and vocals, and Venus had the anthemic chorus

ARTPOP was meant to be her transition back to being fun, colourful and ‘sexy’ but Applause wasn’t the right lead single for that

She should take her back tbh. California Girls, Teenage Dream, Roar, Wide Awake are all signature songs for Mrs Bloom. Edited March 2 by SharGaga
nostalgic Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Applause was the strongest part of the Artpop era? It's just that the rest of the album couldn't keep the quality up and was a massive step down from her previous work. Let's not blame Katy's mediocre song for Gaga's artistic decline, it was her own doing. If the music was what it should have been, things may have been different.

You don’t seem to understand the meaning of burning bridges. If anything, Bonnie may have been the one to wrong Katy and cause Katy to no longer want to work with her. 1
JonginBey Posted March 2 Posted March 2 (edited) There was room for both songs to be hits, but Gaga’s pretentiousness and overselling turned people off, especially when the music was okay at best. Edited March 2 by JonginBey

Yea clearly it was just a small misunderstanding about the meaning of the term. I don't see how that's funny? Dutch is my native language. I'm not aware that Bonnie was begging on social media. That seems almost impossible to believe that someone would do that so publicly unless someone is exaggerating? I don't care either way. Edited March 2 by SharGaga

She should have made an album of bops and marketed it in a more accessible way. 1
Xtripped Posted March 2 Posted March 2 She was ready to end Katy, lbh Gaga's ego is big enough to think she was gonna win that battle, little did she know. The "leak" was always part of the plan.
