What moments in history/pop culture do you feel elite for being alive to witness?

What are some MOMENTS in history & pop culture that you've witnessed, that you can't imagine not being alive, or old enough, to witness?

I'm not a LM, but I feel kinda elite that I literally watched Lady Gaga's rise from the VERY beginning. I'm talking from the very first performance of Just Dance on Miss USA (or was it Miss World?) 2008, when she performed while the contestants were showcasing their bikini looks :rip:. I thought nothing of this new indie act that "did gay club music in 2008 :toofunny2:." So I proceeded to wish her AN OUNCE of luck at that time. When I tell you I was BIG-CLOCKED in the following months when I kept hearing that same indie dance song from Miss USA, slowly play on MTV, Muchmusic & everywhere else in around Fall 2008. I still wrote her off as "one of those yearly one-hit wonders (with a stage name like that :ahh: you bet your ass)." Then Poker Face came out & my mind said "Ok, bet! Two hit wonder." And then LoveGame & she began rocking some of the most  strangest & outlandish looks @ red carpets that would make the evening ET tabloid news, EVERY evening it seemed. Add in Paparazzi & the Illuminati speculation & scares from 2009 & you've got the makings of a world legend that you were able to witness from the start :jonny4:. Her come-up is the most fascinating to me because I KNOW a lot of monsters (late Gen Z ones) would sell their soul & their left kidney for a recollection of that era. UGH, you just had to be there, bestie. Is all I can say tbh :smitten:!!

And on a more serious note, I often try to imagine that I'm a gen-Z'er who have absolutely no recollection of 9/11, and it still boggles my mind. Not that it was a must-see event, but just how it had such a massive impact on me & essentially took the innocence from the collective of Gen Y is a feeling that I can't imagine not having tbh.

I imagine Gen Z ers & some early Gen Alphas might feel the same way about experiencing Covid first few years in the years to come tbh.

the rise of kpop. the fact that we went from no asian artists on the IFPI albums list to having 7 groups in the Top 20 and racists always call it a fad:jonny5:

Katy's Teenage Dream was the era that made me start paying attention to music charts. It was around the point when E.T. went #1 that I was like, "Oh, this is like... insane." So seeing her repeat history with LFN right after was kind of mind-blowing to me at the time. I still think PoM should count for the overall record, but eh.

Watching Gaga’s 2009 VMA performance live changed me, her whole rise to power from the beginning of 2009 to the end of that year really was like nothing we’ve seen since. Soo sensational and objectively exciting. Also Miley in 2013 was iconic as ****. I guess I’m just glad I got to witness the last few years of the VMAs actually being a cultural touchstone lol

i do kinda remember 9/11 too, which I realize makes me an old crone now :chick3:

On February 20, 2024, Normani wiped her social media channels, signaling an impeding announcement. The following day, Normani announced her forthcoming debut studio album. She also shared the artwork that depicts Normani in a black-leather bikini riding a black rocket ship against a white backdrop. Later that day, she shared an album snippet on both her Instagram and TikTok pages.

Gaga's rise from mid 2008-early 2010. I remember watching a clip of that performance she did on the Now New Next or whatever they were called awards, I think that was her first TV performance, after seeing a gay on a forum make a thread about her. And then I streamed "Just Dance" and loved it and followed her from that moment. That whole year and a half was so intense and fascinating how she became the biggest thing in the world.

Gagas rise was bigger than any popstar of the latest generation. It was as if culture was changing

What a time to be alive. I was obsessed with the charts as a kid and whenever nobody was watching TV I'd have MTV Music on, from 2010-2012 they played ALL our faves all the time, but Katy and Rihanna in particular were inescapable on the channel. I would give anything for another lineup of popstars to grace us, aside from a select few none of them do it the way previous generations have

The rise of Ariana Grande :jonny5: Been following her since Victorious days and who knew she was about to become a mega star.

And I've been following kpop for almost a decade now, so watching it growing slowly with the rise of BTS and BLACKPINK, and expanding to the global market was fascinating.
