GeminiCat Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Quote Universal Music Publishing Group songs are now being removed from TikTok. As previously reported, the publisher’s controlled compositions were always set to join the removal of recordings of Universal Music Group by the end of February. The major has been embroiled in a war of words with TikTok, as they failed to reach a new licensing agreement. It has prompted industry reaction from a fellow major as well as the independent sector. The removal of UMPG repertoire will have a wider industry impact as it affects recording artists signed to non-UMG labels, as well as artists who have collaborated with UMPG songwriters. Licensed music recordings that contain compositions controlled by UMPG will now be removed from the general music library, meaning that any TikTok creator videos featuring that music will be muted. It will cover songs written or co-written by a songwriter signed to UMPG. UMPG is widely acknowledged as the No.2 music publisher globally and it represents a vast catalogue of songs, including artists and songwriters such as Adele, Jack Antonoff, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Lana Del Rey, Kid Harpoon, Ice Spice, Elton John/Bernie Taupin, Lorde, Demi Lovato, Metallica, Metro Boomin, Miguel, Britney Spears, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, SZA, Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd, and many more. Music Week understands that UMPG’s catalogue represents between 20% and 30% of popular songs on TikTok, depending on the territory. UMPG songs are now being removed from TikTok

Songs written or produced by UMPG artists such as PTTR are being removed, SZA entire catalogue being removed even though she's with RCA/Sony bc she has publishing through UMPG. They weren't initially removed but now pretty much everything touched by UMG or through their publishing is getting scrubbed off the site now. Edited February 27 by GeminiCat 28 6 7 1

Gossip_Boy Posted February 27 Posted February 27 I thought SZA and co were safe since the big purge happened awhile ago. Couldn’t they wait for Lana to be released first

This also impacts many other artists who are not directly under UMG. E.g. Lots of Beyoncé songs (including Cuff It which was massively viral ) have now been removed But yes of course there’s not much they can do about sped up versions or remixes
Moonlight Nation Posted February 27 Posted February 27 At least Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson, Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, and Bruno Mars are safe... for now 1

Seahorse Posted February 27 Posted February 27 This is a terrible decision. TikTok is what has been putting on so many of these songs and new artists. 3 1
glitch Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Tiktok only pays labels per video the song is used in. They don't pay based on the number of times those videos are liked/viewed. Until they change that, I fully support this decision and that by UMG 6 3

You should be behind the company that’s backing up people’s rights in being payed fairly. Being the platform that promotes this song doesn’t give them the right to act the way they want without consequences. 5

TikTok will be fine without them lbr 5
