As a Mariah, Gaga and Taylor superfan I felt compelled to share some of the things Katy has said about my faves in the past that didn't age well. Exhibit #1 : Calling Mariah a throwback. At the height of her career in 2014 Katy Perry felt comfortable enough to call Mariah fabulous for a throwback. In hindsight this was during the success of her last smash hit Dark Horse. Years later people would ask questions like 'What happened to Katy Perry?' or 'Why isn't she producing hits like she used to?' Exhibit #2 : Time the ultimate truth teller. After people tried to cancel Taylor for that Kanye phone call, Katy felt comfortable enough to post that shady Hillary chuckling GIF with another tweet saying 'Time the ultimate truth teller. In hindsight after listening to the entire phone call Taylor was clearly uncomfortable with Kanye and was just trying not to step on his toes. She even mentions not wanting to be called a ***** in the song. Exhibit #3 : Sneak dissing Gaga for her relationship with her fans. In an 2012 interview Katy can be seen interlacing her fingers and pleading that she doesn't treat her fans as her 'precious little fans' or something like that. Similar sentiment was shared in an 2014 magazine interview saying her relationship with her fans is different and that she doesn't say things like that she would die for her fans. Again I'm paraphrasing but at the time people thought this was a diss to Gaga who happened to be at a low point during the ARTPOP era. She shared the same sentiment while accepting an award but I can't remember what she exactly said about the fans. In hindsight creating a strong intimate relationship with your fans early on doesn't seem like such a bad idea after all. Exhibit #4 : Swish Swish vs Bad Blood It's been speculated that Swish Swish is about Katy. In the song Katy brags about Taylor having to 'kiss the ring', 'her lasting longer than a minute' and even mentions about 'karma keeping receipts'. She even got Nicki rapping on the track about 'making hits with Katy'. Ironically this was Katy's last viral moment musically for releasing an over the top music video. I'm not counting any behaviour that went viral on Idol. Katy quickly realizing that this song would not look good on her in the long run sent Taylor an olive branch and apologized while Taylor was on the highest grossing North American Leg ever. Katy however experienced her first underperforming era and was struggling to sell out arenas. Exhibit #5 : Shading Gaga for the Alejandro MV. In 2010 Katy sneak dissed Gaga for the religious imagery used in the MV comparing it to fart jokes. Years later she would face similar backlash for having Islamic imagery carefully tucked away in one of the MV stills for Dark Horse. This was later digitally removed. It's also important to note that besides the stealing dancers accusations, Taylor also called out Katy for coming up to her at award shows and never knowing if Katy was complimenting or insulting her. These are just little things I remember from following all things pop culture from all the pop girlies since 2011. It seems Katy has become more humble in interviews after the Witness era and it should be noted that all differences between said pop stars seem to have been healed and repaired. What is your hot take on some of the things she said in the past that ended up working against her? And after all this, in 2020, she was yet AGAIN releasing on top of Gaga (she dropped her brand new single 4 days after SL) and then was pretending Taylor was on Daisies (whilst rain on me was being teased). It’ll happen again this time. It’s such a kii and a backfire that her team feel the need to do this every era now, especially after she was so arrogant and mean to other girlies at her peak Edited February 26 by Mr. Stratus
