Netflix's Avatar: TLA is oficially rotten on RT | 59% (-9)

I've said this since day one - shows like Avatar are nearly impossible to adapt because animation is integral to the tone of the story.

The awkward design choices (the blocky arrow shape on Aang's head for example) and the occasional slapstick comedy flow better in a 100% artificial, drawn presentation. But once you've got real life actors acting out the same scenes it starts to feel cheesy and somehow even MORE unrealistic.

Another MASSIVE disappointment for Netflix - this plus Rebel Moon must have their accountants ripping their hair out :coffee:

i knew from the moment they said they changed the storyline by removing some adventures, that it was gonna flop. plus, the main creators not being involved, and the shitty sokka casting.

So strange, I've seen nothing but good feedback on my time lines. People seem to be enjoying it.

Hopefully this buries any future live adaptations of this property for good.

A huge problem with these type of adaptations is that they have a... "quality" that makes it hard for some to get into it. They're not necessarily BAD, but they're not good (or THAT good) either. From the acting, dialogue, and effects; something feels "not there yet" and/or awkward. Tried watching, but some of the effects were... eh.  They also awkwardly try to mimic the mannerisms and speech found in other mediums, but it just doesn't translate well into live adaptations. The way Aang would awkwardly smile while looking over the temple, the way he speaks to one of his masters/his "friend," etc. It just made me sigh and made me unsure if I want to continue watching, and guess what? I haven't even finished episode one. It just gives me the same vibes as the live adaptation of One Piece, and... nah. I've had enough of that. These live adaptations, especially Netflix', have the same "feeling" to them. They need to step it up, they feel half-baked. Good enough for some (or maybe a lot tbf) of people, but def not for everyone.

And people are liking this, just a bunch of n*rds with a pen who want an exact copy of the animated series. Every bad review is like "uhmm, the CGI, effects and visuals are good... but but but the animated series..." :snowball:

I’m now through the second episode. It seems like the acting is better when they are recreating scenes from the initial series. The vfx are okay. Some are better than others. If approached as other a) a new series or b) a somewhat faithful retelling, then you will enjoy it. If you look for this series to recreate everything from the original, you will be disappointed. It’s not perfect. There are definitely some scenes/storylines that could have been done well. It’s definitely not terrible - certainly not as bad as the movie was.

Huge fan of the animated series and I just binged the whole season. It was honestly great. Epic war moments, incredible costumes and extravagant sets. Only drawback is that some actors are too Nickelodeon'd but all in, I enjoyed every episode

I would encourage you to keep going. The first episode was the roughest that I’ve seen. I’m on episode 4 right now and they do get better. I think episode 1 also struggled a bit because there wasn’t any source material to go off of for the first half. We knew that the air benders were killed and that Aang was frozen with appa. They had to write a script for it the whole thing from scratch pretty much. Zuko, Sokka, and (slowly but surely) Iroh are great. Bummi is a decent adaptation so far. Aang and Katara are getting better.

Some of the dialogue was a bit rotten but most of the lines I cringed at were in the original…

This had so much potential. The lack of color is Abyssal Milano :biblio: I wanted to like this and I wanted the naysayers to be wrong. But there is potential. I love it when shows gets better.
