The budget for Todd Phillips’ musical “Joker” sequel — one of De Luca and Abdy’s first green lights — has ballooned to about $200 million, a significant bump from the $60 million cost of the first film. Sources say Joaquin Phoenix is getting $20 million to reprise his role as the clown prince of crime, while Lady Gaga is taking home about $12 million to play Harley Quinn. “Joker” took in more than $1 billion, but musicals are tricky. Case in point: Warners lost $40 million on last year’s “The Color Purple,” according to sources. Though that one can be blamed on the previous regime.

I'm not sure it will be a musical in that sense; the cinematographer doesn't seem to think it will be

The only thing I’ve seen about this movie are random stills with Phoenix and Gaga and that it’s a musical. If it’s not a musical then it’s HORRIBLE marketing to even insinuate such because majority of the population won’t even touch a musical

Do we know if they're using original songs for the movie, or already existing songs? I imagine licensing for songs might be expensive, which may partly explain the insane budget increase compared to the firs one

I think she earned like $5-10M for ASIB

We never had a number for Gucci

and now $12M for Joker

Going from $60M to $200M may seem a bit excessive but in the hindsight it makes sense.

The first one is a billion dollar grossing film and Phoenix won a best actor oscar for the role which brought huge buzz to the franchise. He has to be paid accordingly. Same goes for Todd Philips. Then Gaga has to be paid as well.
 

And most importantly, it’s probably going to be a much bigger movie than Joker. You can only really do the small, and therefore low budget, character study once.
