Is Beyoncé about to have a reverse Taylor Swift experience?

Recommended Posts

In 2014, Taylor Swift famously left her country music to make pop-inspired songs with 1989 and got the biggest album of her career.

Is Beyoncé about to have the opposite experience after leaving the dance sounds of Renaissance for country and smashing?

Probably not, but it does seem like the GP is indeed here for her new sound and her offering something fresh and new

I honestly think the GP just want a more inoffensive, diluted version of Beyoncé (like what she was pre-self titled) who sings simpler (but still vocally impressive) songs that can be sang along to and played on radios. I don’t think her going country is necessarily a factor. She could have gone pop and she’d be seeing the same success.

Who knows, but more than anything I love that this is gifting Bey another big "Pop" moment.

I think that's what being understandably overlooked amidst this "Country radio debate'...which in and of itself is great promo.

The fame game as an artist is really just that...a tiring, calculated game. But all our faves have to play it.

Bey has been smart to set up shop within R&B and chill there. It's a safe haven and gives her rule in that lane while some of the other Pop girls duke it out for Hot 100 and Z100 dominance.

That said, as a top tier act (for whom stadium touring is her "thing"), there's a literal necessity for Bey to swoop in occasionally for big Pop/GP-geared moments. Something she proved she's willing to do with the likes of Break My Soul, Cuff It, and now Texas.

As a veteran, premium "artiste", and a Black woman at that, she probably has the most difficult task with this as she a) can't do it as on-the-nose as the other girls, b) can't be seen to chase trends like the other girls, c) has to still consider her Urban base and risk of alienating them and d) has to pull off Pop while still innovating her overall output (versus a lot of the other Pop girls who are "allowed" to rehash the same sound over and over. Specifically because innovation and envelope-pushing are her established...thing.

So, in many ways, what she's pulling off with this mainstream moment is pretty monumental.

No.

Taylor going pop was always expected by the gradual changes from her debut to Red.

Beyonce going country is jumping on the bandwagon when country is so big right now in the US.

i've NEVER been into country or anything that remotely resembles that genre

BUT for some reason i'm loving these Bey outputs and can't get them out of my head.

I feel like she is about to give us something really special, this truly feels like a reinvention

The New York Times (literally one of the top tier reporting outlets in the world) reported Beyonce was doing a country album: TWO YEARS AGO

I agree with this for the most part.

As a fan of hers from the start of DC, I will say though that the edgy-girl/anti-Pop star pivot from ST up to just before Renaissance was necessary for her to be as critically acclaimed and celebrated as she is today. I say the same for her centering her Blackness (in sound and imagery) in that time too.

Because, I will be the first to admit, as much as 4 remains my fave album of hers, I'm not sure she'd be as iconic as she is today musically had she kept with the same R&B/Pop-lite she was chasing )and achieving) with that era and earlier.

Sure, a few more attempts with Best Thing I Never Had type songs may have yielded her a few more Hot 100 hits, but I think it would have burned her flame out earlier.

But strategically it's served her well having a relatively big gap between her last all out play for the Pop market and now. Delayed gratification, while strengthening  her core audience, is leaving to this collective slay now. And that's not to say she / her team planned all this out with some genius strategy from the get go, but looking at it all from an aerial view and with historical hindsight, it's all worked out.

Beyoncé is releasing a trilogy of projects that 'reclaim' and celebrate music genres that were originally created by black people but have been co-opted by white people.

has she explicitly said this? this deserves its own thread sis.

Bey is genreless. She has a voice that can do basically anything with the right production and she cares enough for it. So hopefully more experiments in the future

No, she hasn't explicitly stated this. But she hasn't said anything, period. :toofunny3: It's what was leaked and reported when rumours first started swelling before the release of RENAISSANCE. The albums were rumoured to be dance/house, country and rock. We're two for three so far.

People just miss Bey singing easy to sing songs yet fun songs, that is why CUFF IT also smashed.

If She will released songs like from 4 or IASF she will smashed again

Yeah, in the album booklet of Renaissance. She said its a 3-act-project, up till last saturday tho, we didnt know if it meant act 1: Rennie, act 2: The Tour, act3: The MVs/Film, or truly 3 distinct album eras.

Also, Amazon Italy said its a 3 act project about reclaiming formerly black genres when Rennie dropped, but they deleted that description shortly after.

So nothing was sure whatsoever.

So now after last Sunday its safe to say: Amazon Italy was very likely right all along :jonny6:

I'm grateful to be European because these conversations about whites against blacks don't belong to me, guys you must know that culture is universal: we literally live in a society born in the Middle East developed in Greece by a species born in Africa...

Yeah, the origins of the music are very interesting. In country specifically, black artists have been aggressively pushed out of the genre. As always, there's a lot of meaning behind Beyoncé's decisions with her music.

:lmao: She has stated that it's a three-act project that was recorded during the pandemic, but not the genres/meaning behind it. That was leaked, as @Kristie Kuwa said by Amazon Italy.

anything is better than the bey mumble rap era, I'm glad she's finally singing again on both acts

idk about that hun, when it comes to music this conversations have a lot of depth

take Elvis Presley for example, he basically stole everything from black artists, the moves, the sound, the aesthetic

“Jumping on the bandwagon” is a crazy statement to make about a Texan woman who inherently has always been country & started working on this album in 2019.

Exactly. It's not that difficult to see that the most successful songs in the world are easy-listening and sing-a-longable kind of tunes. "House" or Urban music are still very exclusive to a certain demographics while THE has a wider appeal

This only shows that the public does not care for Beyoncé’s urban music while her pop songs seem to resonate much better with their expectations.
