I used to think so too but I realized that's her songwriting style, she doesn't really go for poetry, she just has more of an old school literal and confessional approach. She's a country singer after all. 1

And like some are saying- this has always been Kacey’s style but this is a little different because most of Kacey’s “on the nose” lyrics are all tied together to a larger very clever metaphor throughout one whole song and they used to be very witty lyrics that made you go “oh wow… that was good.” But these lyrics lack that tied together theme and more so feels diaristic in nature. It’s still great songwriting, there’s just less world building and storytelling. I love this song’s message. 3
SitarHero Posted February 9 Posted February 9 As someone who liked Solar Power, I'm getting that ~enlightened~ vibe from this. I hope there's some angst on the album though
Lazuli Posted February 9 Posted February 9 a much needed retreat back to her core sound after whatever the heck star crossed was

Spot on here--I like it enough melodically to have had on repeat, but I'm missing that Kacey 'twist' to make the lyrics fresh. Like a reference to throwing a penny in a wishing well and then finding the deeper well inside herself...or how she used to be 'doing just well' and then found a deeper well...idk I'm clearly not a songwriter lol which is why I need Kacey to make those clever observations of the otherwise typical.
