Have you ever been to Madrid?

I've only been to Sevilla recently to reconnect with family.

Madrid seems like a whole different world so I'm wondering if there are any locals or people who have been there before who can guide me on how to being an outsider and surviving it.

Surviving? It's a beautiful city in a developed country.

it can be overwhelming for someone who hasn't been there before, no one's mentioned development or anything related. this is purely about advice on your experiences there.

Went there a couple of years ago, my bf surprised me for a trip there for my birthday.

I immediately fell in love with the city. It's huge, people are very nice, the food is amazing and it's cheap (compared to Amsterdam).

i spent about a week there last year and loved it. its a big city but doesnt always feel like it. it felt relatively safe and theres a lot to see and do. i loved that in spain, in big and small cities alike, people didnt seem to care if you were a tourist or not.

I've been twice, it's a very beautiful city! Not as gorgeous as Paris, Rome or Florence, but there are still a lot of architectures to admire! I don't really get what you mean by "surviving" tho... Europe is not the jungle...

edit : just read the posts above. yes! the food is delicious too! :jonnycat:

Nice city. It was hot in the summer though, I couldn’t take it. But the food was good. Especially the tapas. I found the people rather nice.

Madrid is sort of like Milan except less interesting and with more bland architecture.  It’s generally safe and there’s a lot of nightlife if you’re into that.  Food is good, people are nice, but you’ll quickly notice that it’s a financial and consulting hub over an actual tourist and vacation destination like Barcelona and most of the southern Spanish cities.

Salamanca is my favorite neighborhood, it’s basically a twin of NYC’s Upper East Side.

Milan can be seen in one day, Madrid takes up at least 3 or even 4! Risky comment to say the least

Yes great shopping and rooftop bars. The people were nicer, compared to Barcelona where they can be more stuck up.

I don't totally disagree. I lived there for about six months and absolutely loved it. But it's definitely more of a great place to live than a tourist destination. Somewhere like Barcelona caters much more to the tourist experience. That said, between the food, the museums, the nightlife, Parque Retiro, etc., anyone who visits Madrid is going to have a good time.

I don’t think either city can be seen in one day tbh, and I lived in Milan for a few months.  Madrid is a lot of fun but it’s sort of like other major financial hubs where you’re better off knowing someone to take you out to have the best experience in comparison to places like Barcelona or Rome where everything is sort of in front of your face.

Yes, went in June 2019 and walked right by Jake Gyllenhaal

No, Madrid and Barcelona do not interest me much. I'm more interested in Northern Spain.

Yes, it’s great, delicious food, gorgeous men, really accessible. Go to Chueca and be a ho.

I did a walking tour, it lasted like 2-3 hours. Learned a good amount of history and facts about the city, there were lots of people who visited from around the world and connected with them.

Several times. It’s a nice city but not much more to do besides the typical touristic places. Too cold in winter and too hot in the summer. Used to be very open minded but now we need to take caution as in the last years the rise of nazis has grown rapidly and they are now ruled by an extreme right government. Barcelona is way more open minded and more diverse regarding activities, even tho it’s not as safe (but still safe)

I'm from Madrid and although it's not as architecturally beautiful as Barcelona , it's a very friendly place with gorgeous spots. Here are some of my recommendations:

-All of Parque del retiro is a must

-Jardines del campo del moro: they have a beautiful view of the royal palace

Just walk around and get lost thorough the streets.

-Iglesia de San Antonio de los alemanes: A stunning church in Chueca

-Barrio de Chueca: the lgtbq neighborhood , just behind gran via, full of cool cafés & restaurants

-Malasaña: the hipster neighborhood full of vintage clothing shops.

-Real Monasterio de las descalzas reales: a stunning monastery near sol.

-Museo Sorolla: A beautiful museum worth visiting

-The museum triangle: Thyssen , Prado & Sofía

-Real Jardin Botánico

-Mercado de san Miguel : a perfect spot for some tapas

-Royal Palace & Basilica de San Francisco el grande

-If you have time , a walk through Madrid Río is also nice , you can start from "pirámides" and walk up to Puente de Segovia.

Nightlife: well there's plenty for all people , I don't know what your'e looking for exactly
