Record Of The Year should award the song for its whole, with particular emphasis on production work, vocal performance, and the song's cultural presence that year. Song Of The Year should award the strongest composition of the year among the submitted songs - considering both lyrics and the songwriting in terms of structure and melodic work. Compositions with unique, creative elements, unconventional structures, atypical topics, and/or powerful messages should typically be rewarded. You'd think those responsible for voting - people who directly work in the music industry and have probably followed the Grammys for decades - should know the difference by now, but as we know, that isn't always the case, leading us to some truly bizarre winners and ideal contenders being paid dust, if not outright snubbed.
